*Official* Fifth Test (The Oval, London) 27-31 July

True, he is. Has great potential. But I also think they should stop bigging him up.

Chappell was a great batsman. But his prowess as a judge of cricketing talent brought us such luminaries as Michael Beer, Xavier Dougherty and Doug the Rug. I can understand why the Indians basically ran him out of the place.

I think the Aussies will be up for this one. It's a very big match for them. The poms have had some air let out of their tyres, remains to be seen if they can get themselves back up after the disappointment.

Or a "'ranga" as they call them in some parts.

Apart from possible injuries (not sure how our bowlers pulled up) seems likely the only change for the Aussies will be that one of Marsh/Green will miss out for Murphy. Can only guess that they both played in the last match because the Aussies planned on a weather affected draw. On form Green...

    Thoughts on Geoffrey Boycott?

His batting was the stuff of legend, it used to put the seagulls to sleep. Would be good if I could dislike him, but unfortunately I've tried and couldn't manage it. Something strangely likeable about him, a bit of a character.

Also in the lead for most spiritual centuries (1-0). We struggle with those, only count real ones.

    Pat Cummins

Yes, my point certainly was both verified and demonstrated by another poster (though unwittingly). Should have been obvious anyway. Now, let's move on...

To myself, the truth of the second sentence rules out the claim in the first. I think most linguists would agree that for many and varied reasons (that can, but don't always amount to a lack of comprehension) the English language doesn't work the same for all. As you correctly say, this causes...

    Yes, really (and quite obviously).

Because we seem to have looked at the same words yet interpreted their meaning differently.

I agree he screws up at times. In fact I contend that the poms being 2-1 down is in no small part due to his captaincy errors. In my opinion that doesn't indicate "awesomeness", much less and "absolute" form of it. Then again I have doubts that absolutes exist in reality. The term "hyperbole"...

Well then, I guess the English language might be working in a slightly different way for us individually, in this instance.

..Stokes has his own failings with tactics...apart from his failures with declarations (or lack of).. :D

Is not the underlined another way of saying that the English language does not work the same for all? :D

I have no rose tinted view of Smith as a Captain. I would like to see him get the Captaincy back for a couple of reasons however. One - he would be no worse than Cummins and potentially make better bowling changes. Secondly (and most importantly) there is a large and sanctimonious...

I would be happy for Cummins to give up on Captaincy. Obviously tactics are discussed before the match but when you can see they are rubbish and not working out in the middle, there's only one person who can change that. That's on Cummins. His (mis)use of his spinner, and then leaving him out...

*Official* Fourth Test (Old Trafford, Manchester) 19-23 July

I thought at the time that putting the foot down and getting the Aussies back in late day 2 chasing 150-180 was the way to go. It might not have worked, but we know that what they did failed to get a result. Would have been very disappointed in Cummins if he just patiently played out the day...

Don't think traditional English pitches would be described as "fast". They are more conducive to some sideways movement though (and keep the ball in better shape for longer). Usually kryptonite for Aussie batsmen. Trying to make them faster and harder/bouncier will always help the Aussies...
