How is it fantastic? It's difficult to make even a 40 on the wicket. Its not a contest between bat and ball. One cannot be set. It's a one sided game and instead of any player being the star, the pitches are the star for the wrong reasons.
Rubbish. No one has made above 40 because they have all batted terribly. There have maybe been 3 good balls this whole game (Pujara second innings, Vilas and Harmer). Rest has just been atrocious batting vs some high quality bowling from Morkel, Ashwin, Jadeja and co.

It has taught us that if you bat like the pitch is a minefield then you will lose wickets like you would on a minefield. It has taught us that if yout bowlers don't have the accuracy to exploit the conditions on offer, you will suffer.
No **** sherlock, i never knew that. Except that's not what i meant. I meant that winning on these sorts of tracks that fall short of just being called 'doctored' is not really going to tell us much about the merit of either our bowling or batting department. Ashwin and Jadeja looking like Murali here doesn't mean they're that good because it's flattering even the ordinary SAF spinners. Like it or not, the psychological aspect of playing on a bunsen does have an effect in causing uncharacteristic dismissals from many batsmen who rightly fall back on aggression than patience.

The sweep is to try get to the pitch of the ball when you keep getting beaten when playing with a straight bat, driving on the up because the previous ball was bowled a little faster and you have miss judged the speed because it keeps on holding up in the pitch. Slogging because every-time you try block the ball it beats you bat... etc etc etc...
Look at how Pujara plays his defence. He comes down the track every occasion he can and not to smash it into the stands. And if it is short, you go back.. Premeditating the sweep is hardly the solution.

Yeah. I hope people realise these are professional cricketers. They are playing unconventionally as they won't last playing the 'proper' cricket much. The thinking is that 'let's try and make a quick 40 because that's the maximum I can muster here.'

AGAIN. Vijay Pujara and AB have made runs on these pitches by playing perfectly normally.

Also, seriously stphndbsn, you made a post in the first session on Day 1 saying you weren't going to talk about the pitch anymore, and yet you've been arguing with people about it in here constantly throughout the match. I'm the last person on CW who should be on about keeping people to their word to do stuff (Forumer WC etc etc) but staying to your word to not do something shouldn't be difficult.

Sure. I agree. There's been some inconsistent spin which is very tough to bat against. The only thing we disagree on is that this was somehow unfair to sa. They weren't screwed over by the toss, and the only reason were even having this debate is because of how terribly SA batted. I'm damn sure you agree that 200 was a gettable first inning score on this pitch. Imagine if SA had scored that many. We'd be saying what a great match this is, heading towards a wonderfully tight finish. Instead, SA have batted so poorly that its diverted attention to the pitch. It's just dumb, lazy thinking.
I will say again.. I do not think that this pitch is any more unfair on SA than on India. India just have better resources to use a pitch that favours them.... I have no problem with this. My problem is I don't think this is a good quality international test match pitch. Just like when I complain that a rugby surface should not be shredded during the scrum. Can you imagine Wimbeldon being played on a grass surface that was totally uneven... they would be rioting in the streets.

These are under prepared wickets of poor international test match quality imo....

I notice Indian batsmen playing shots to Tahir so that he gets a 5 for and stays in the team for the final match....:)
And have only one seamer, and three specialist bowlers?
Wait so the fact that they're scared of batting last was the reason they got bowled out for 76 on day 2? Come on, this makes zero sense.
That is a strawman.

No it was mostly poor batting, but to claim the thought of batting last has no effect is completely ridiculous. Both captains went to the toss and hoping to win the toss so they can bat first.

Problem is we went out batting like we already lost, that is why i think we should bring Amla's captaincy into question.

Or you could just leave the balls outside off and spinning away from you alone, play late and with soft hands in defence, and just put the bad balls away?

Had batsmen from both sides just tried to hat sensibly and still got dismissed for <200 scores, then yes the pitch is an issue. The fact that the batsmen dont have techniques they can trust in these conditions, or the temperament to weather tough bowling, does not make the pitch a poor one.

Nobody thinks Ashwin is as good as Murali. People who look at averages as the be all and end all of cricket analysis are not just doing a good job of it anyways.
About India's batting. There has been a marked difference in the way Vijay has batted vs Rahane has and I do think it has something valuable to tell us about their abilities.

Actually, if you go back the last pages I have not mentioned the pitch until this last final post... wanted to but have not mentioned it... others have been arguing...

No. Only the dumb ones who don't have the ability and the temperament have done that.

SA being scared of batting last != unplayable pitch.

It's all in their heads. This pitch is fine.
You obviously haven't checked the scorecards - 30 wickets have fallen for 483 runs at an average of just over 16

The batting might not have been great but the pitch is nowhere near "fine."

South Afri-waahhh
Not just SA either. Guys like Pratters social and King Pietersen who evidently haven't watched a ball of the test have come in here to pass judgement on the pitch. Atleast stphndbsn has followed the test and is in a position to have an actual opinion.

Stiaan van Zyl is so out of his depth vs Ashwin. Gavaskar calls it perfectly - poor footwork, not to the pitch of the ball, ends up driving on the up, caught at short cover. The pitch is perfectly fine ffs.
