Now that
would be a fairytale ending. England suffer their traditional Ashes injury blitz, with only Flintoff, Giles and Simon Jones left of their original bowlers - Tremlett is called up for the 4th Test, and does very well in the absence of Harmison, but between Tests 4 and 5, with the series poised at 2-2, Matthew Hoggard pulls up with a back strain in practice. England don't want to throw in the untried Liam Plunkett, Jon Lewis or Mark Davies in a deciding Test against the Aussies, so they call up the experienced Caddick for one last hurrah, knowing he'll give his all and not be overawed by the occasion.
England fight gallantly despite their injuries, making 370 in their first innings, but the Aussies make a daunting 420 in reply. However, everything goes wrong and England are skittled for 110 in their second innings, with the Aussies set 160 to win in two and a half sessions due to a bit of rain. The Aussies make it to 80-2 and look set to win easily - but Freddie and Tremlett share 3 wickets before tea to restrict them to 120-5, with Gilchrist at the crease and only 40 needed to win.
After tea, Vaughan throws the ball to Caddick, who hasn't taken a wicket in the match yet, entrusting him with the task of dismissing Gilchrist in tandem with Flintoff. Not only does Caddick dismiss Gilly, but he rips out the Aussie tail in a spell of 5-14 in 8 overs, winning the game by 16 runs and the Ashes for England.
*wakes from dreamland to discover Caddick is now very old and pretty rubbish, and Duncan Fletcher's probably forgotten who he is by now anyway*
