Am I the only one here who rates Sunil Gavaskar slightly above Viv Richards in Test?

thinking of it, Roberts the bowling equivalent of De Villiers, comes up when the condition is tough, goes missing at home.

Except Bradman, no one is inarguably better batsman than Hutton.
Hutton became a Cricketer because he read a book from Sir Jack Hobbs.

As his father was a good club cricketer and his three elder brothers were also real enthusiasts, cricket was the topic of the home and Leonard, from an early age, studied all the available books on the game. He says that one book by Jack Hobbs fired his imagination so much that he set his mind upon becoming proficient at cricket.
So Hutton will tell you Hobbs was far greater than him.

That's actually a very poor argument really..... Hadlee will tell you Lillee was better than him, etc. Idol worship is very much a thing. Also I think I will agree that except Don, no one's inarguably better than Hutton (and I rate Hobbs a very clear no 2).

Kallis gets a hard time for not being that batsman that can flip a switch and accelerate an innings, dominate an attack.

Hutton also received that criticism, even while playing and was even slower.

The excuse was that he was an opener, but Hobbs in his day did it.

Then some say that that's what they want from their openers, but at the end of the day it's a limitation, not a feature.

He was great, definitely elite.

For me he isn't quite 100% up there with Hobbs, Sachin, Viv and Garry.

Viv is regarded as one of the best players vs pace bowling. But because he played in the greatest side of all time, he enjoyed the privilege of playing freely and aggressively. He could afford to try and dominate opposition the way he wishes too. He may get out occasionally playing a rash out but someone else will come and save him.

Question is that if Viv played in a weak team, would he had maintained the same mindset and attitude or he would have tone down, bat more sensibly and for longer period? If he did that, would he average higher or not? Did he had the versatility to bat in that style even? I do know that he was an all conditions batter and that is what sets him apart from say, a Sehwag. An all conditions batter who demolished opposition at his prime and had a phenomenal peak.

He'd probably average a lot higher considering his runs would be needed tor the team more than they were for Windies in the 80s.

on Gavaskar, I can't really think of any situation where I'd take him over Viv bar a hot day on a slow pitch against a middling attack.

I would take him on a turner 100% of the times, as will do a slow Pakistani pitch.
