That is the case. I was happy that he was dropped for this tour as his form had been terrible. However, if he averages over 80 early in the CC season then he'll have a big chance at test recall. Ballance has a technical problem with very full balls, he can't score off them and more often than...

To be fair to Bell, he single handedly won England the Ashes in 2013 against a decent Australian attack that caused all sorts of problems to the other batsmen in the top 6.

Bell may slot back in at 5 if Taylor fails against Sri Lanka. I think he's much better at 5 & 6 than any other position.

I think it's the most shameful thing about this England team. No desire to crush the opponent, only to beat them and offer consolation. I would have taken 2-1 if offered at the start of the series but these types of capitulations are becoming predictable.

Lacks the technique of a test opening batsman. Poor composure leading to muddled thinking. I'd give him the Headingley test against Sri Lanka to score some runs but Lyth might get another go if he has a good start to the CC.

And with it the most wickets in the series! It really has been a breakthrough for Kagiso.

Had we had the likes of a Ponting, Sangakkara, Younus or Hussey that side would have stayed no.1 until 2013-14.

Sam Hain may be good enough to play for Australia in a couple of years. Is he likely to do a Robson and reject his fatherland?

It's not great when someone like Darren Bravo would easily hold a spot in this lineup if he was English. It think he's a good player but he wouldn't have been in consideration 4-5 years ago.

It's annoying. England have two brilliant batsmen (one a prolific accumulator, the other the best English batsman since WW2) but an utter death of talent otherwise. Where are the young Smiths, Bells, Thorpes, Collingwoods, Trescothicks, Vaughans and Trotts? At least we've got Stokes, but I'm...

Pundits even entertaining the possibility of a chase. England are one of the worst chasing teams in history. It would be their record 4th innings chase. Stick to your strength. The only way to aid SA is to lose wickets in a fruitless chase.

Hales' best knock of the series came when he was extremely circumspect on the Cape Town featherbed. Perhaps Hales in Compton mode could go a long way to saving the game.

England should back themselves to block out for the draw. The way Amla and Bavuma have batted makes this track less threatening than it appears. SA really need to declare after Amla's century to give themselves enough time as England won't attempt to chase this target unless they want the day...

Anyone think that Abbott's injury and Rabada's fatigue will give England a sniff in a chase! Piedt has been okay but most bats have been comfortable.

I don't understand why people are writing off us saving the game. I can see a 200 ball 50 partnership between Cook and Compo.

Would Atherton get in the test side if he was 25 now?

I'm not arguing for anyone to be discarded. I think the entire lineup will get the tests against Sri Lanka (unless we lose the first test and given our poor record in Headingley is not unlikely). The way Ramprakash talks about Hales is borderline delusional. Under no circumstance should he be...
