"If New Zealand can strike again before the drinks break and get a couple before lunch, they'll be well in control". ...you think so?

Nice day for a Smith century imo.

Ball was turning a bit for Lyon. If the pitch flattens out and batting becomes easy, some sort of spin option might be preferable to a 5th seamer. Doesn't necessarily mean he warrants selection but I can see the argument that he might be missed.

Only real exception for me is I do think there needs to be some basic standards in place to ensure teams have ample opportunity to win the game. Like if you're playing for a draw on day 5, bowling 10 overs an hour definitely shouldn't be acceptable. But as an overall issue in cricket it seems so...

Pretty crappy first few overs from Southee and Boult.

I feel like the answer to that video question thing is vaguely NSFW. They just ignored it, I guess.

Crazy to think that the no ball wicket would have put New Zealand close to out of the contest, or at least needing an awesome bowling performance. From that to New Zealand probably slightly in front in a few overs.

Haha, a filthy slog followed by a really nice shot over cover. Nice way to get there.

God that first ball from McCullum wasn't promising.

I think batting is really difficult out there, not really a question of form. Three seamers bowling well and plenty of seam movement even after 20 overs. If these two last until lunch it's an excellent session or NZ.

Batting will definitely get easier later in the day. 2 or 3 down for 50 at lunch would be a decent effort IMO.

Bird bowling pretty well. Overall nice batting the last few overs though, leaving well.

Hazlewood and Pattinson are the same age, same number of tests, 67 and 65 wickets respectively, similar average and SR, both within about 2 of each other.

Kinda remarkable there haven't been any wickets yet. New ball doing a lot. edit: There we go.

    Jesus that seam.

Well you'd never get a green wicket, surely. Being guaranteed to always lose the toss would incentivize more "balanced" wickets though.

Still seems too big an advantage to me, like imagine Australia effectively winning the toss every test of a 5 test Ashes series in England. Would have to be a reasonably significant increase in their chance of winning the series. But yeah that'd be better than the home team always batting first...

Yeah. Can still remove one benefit of it though, and the one that most restricts the other team from an opportunity to win/draw the game. Plus the time wasting at throws, goal kicks, subs etc. I feel like every other sport in the world has some sort of system in place to prevent it, crazy that...

    *Official* English Football Season 2015-16

Yeah agree with this post and Furball's for the most part. Diving isn't great and everything but it's nothing in the "blight on the game" stakes compared to time wasting and generally playing for red cards with exaggerating off the ball contact etc. And frankly the time wasting issue is so easy...

Really is something where I can't think of a better option though. You could do something like having the home team always bat first or whatever but that would be way too big an advantage when you have some level of control over the preparation of the wicket. Random chance is one of the better...
