I feel like the pitch preparation discussion should be a really simple one that gets complicated a lot by extreme outliers. I think the home side absolutely should be able to prepare pitches that suit the home team, as long as they are of a reasonable standard, not dangerous, the game doesn't...

Yeah maybe, I just remember him having that gift for the right man in the right place, the right bowling change at the right time etc that the best captains seem to have. I guess that's the whole point I'm making though, I think it's pretty subjective and based on selective memory and...

    Adam Voges average watch

Yeah for sure. But I also think anyone who ever averaged 100 in whatever timeframe also made a lot of easy runs. Like Clarke in 2012 came in at some tougher situations like 3 for under 100 a lot, but other people usually made big runs when he did too. Realistically if you're averaging 100...

Rating captains with any sort of attempt at objectivity is really difficult because so much of what captains do is by rote and goes pretty much unnoticed. Or if you do notice it, chances are lots of captains would have done similar things. The Fleming/Martyn thing is a great example because...

    Adam Voges average watch

On the subject of runs per test/not outs, I think Voges has been pretty limited in terms of how many runs he could possibly have scored in his last 7 tests. He's been not out at the point of declaration or barely able to bat because other people made so many runs on a number of occasions, so you...

Yeah surely specialist Australian batsmen other than Clarke average more than 27 in those conditions? I mean I know Australia has performed pretty poorly in India, but not that badly in the other two places.

Surely any runs made in the first innings matter if a positive result isn't a foregone conclusion? You don't know what is going to happen after that and it could make a difference. Even if the team is getting hammered and he ultimately doesn't win the game for New Zealand, it's not really...

I think first innings runs for the tail are pretty important, if they aren't coming in at 7-600. Like if he'd have made runs in the first innings here it would have mattered for sure. Or really in 90% of first innings scenarios.

    Adam Voges average watch

I've literally not seen a single person "down grading Bradman" based on the achievements of Adam Voges, and can't imagine anyone doing it. What would the argument be? It's not hard to average 100, as evidenced by one person doing it for a one year period?

    Adam Voges average watch

People keep saying stuff like this but if he keeps scoring like he is at the moment he can pass Bradman for all I care. He's made two double centuries in his last 3 test innings. If he keeps that up (which he won't) he'll deserve it. In reality, things will even themselves out. I was just...

A point is still pretty good for Leicester. Going to be a tense finish though.

Yeah Marsh's bowling throughout his test career so far has been a lot better than I'd ever have expected. If he could manage to be a high 30s average sort of batsmen he'd be a pretty impressive cricketer, given that there's plenty of room to improve still.

I really like Khawaja and want him to do well as much as I've wanted an Australian batsman to do well individually in a while. And I think he's done enough at this point to show it's not just a fluke and he's really good. But I think he looks pretty dodgy against spin and can't really imagine...

I don't think there is anyone who could average 100 over a long period of time in all conditions, but he certainly does average 100 now and that obviously indicates he has made quite a few runs. It's not like people regularly come into test cricket and make sequences of unbeaten centuries...

Wasn't he in single figures when he got bowled off the non-no ball? So he still made 170 odd runs without getting out or even giving a chance. I mean by all means stand or not stand as you see fit, you can boo for all I care, I just find your reasoning for thinking his innings wasn't worthy of...

So wait, are you saying his innings was not good? I don't get it. How does one make a bad 176 not out?
