I really don't think this pitch is that bad. Do people really think it's a total road? New ball moving off the seam late on the second day, plenty of bounce and carry. Of course it's not a poor wicket for batting by any means but there's something there for the bowlers for sure. Not as flat as...

Yeah I was thinking 45+ career average at the bare minimum, but that's probably low balling it. There's dozens of players in Sydney grade averaging over 40 for this season for instance, so you need a lot of runs to stand out. Still I think 40 would be a reasonable mark for a "good" player at the...

This sort of thing isn't that uncommon really. Viv Richards averaged over 60 after 45 tests and had 13 hundreds, then didn't score one for 2 years, and finished his career almost a decade later with an average of 50. Some players peak early.

In top level grade cricket in Sydney there's plenty of batsmen averaging above 40 aren't there? I think it depends where you play etc, and what you mean by grade cricket. But if you're a batsman with first class potential playing grade you'd average over 45 for sure. edit: Dan already covered this.

He needs 119*. Or 179 if he gets out.

Interesting hour, seeing how much life is still in the surface with the new ball. Great innings by Smith, the sort of partnership Australia has rarely been able to put together away from home in recent years, got through some good bowling and a bit of sideways movement and capitalised when set...

    Man that looked nasty.

I honestly think Craig would be a significant improvement over a 4th seamer here. I get that people don't rate him but variety matters, changing things up and potentially breaking this partnership could change the game. It's not just about picking the 4 best bowlers you can. Maybe if the 4...

Ah yeah for some reason I remembered the 199 in the West Indies as a double. Just one then.

The statistical category of the "50" in cricket really is pretty dumb. Smith's 29th 50+ score is his "16th test 50", but his two double centuries don't reduce his century count of 13. Doesn't apply to anything else.

Excellent session for Australia, really nice batting after a difficult first hour. Definitely got a small lead now.

I'll just say that a batsman who averages over 40 in every country and hasn't averaged under 40 in a series for 3 years isn't going to average 45-50 and leave it at that. If you think he's overachieving that's totally fine, blaming it on flat Australian pitches really isn't because he's made...

Are you aware that Smith averages over 40 in every country he's played in?

I think it's because the ball has been reversing the last few overs. Hence Henry trying to bowl really full to Smith and getting the ball to come back in to him. Did get an inside edge but also makes scoring much easier.

Yeah probably the best I've seen Burns play. Challenging circumstances for most of the innings, important runs.

The reverse is definitely a bit of a concern. Some threatening inswing from Southee that over.

I... think Smith is a little better through the off side than you give him credit for. I do agree though that you should bowl to him like a normal batsman, off stump line. He's had a leg slip and a short midwicket at times this innings so I do think attacking the stumps is part of the plan.

Big opportunity for Burns here, most of his runs so far at test level have come in pretty comfortable conditions and he's been inconsistent. Done well to work through the new ball here, a good score could cement his place in the side for a fair while.
