Hopefully Boards and international sides can get away from the idea that a coach needs to be a 'high profile' ex player. I know Ronald McDonald played for Australia, but isn't a 'big name' in terms of public perception. The 'big names' ie Langer, Kirsten, Flower, maybe even your Shastris etc seem to bring a knowledge but also baggage in terms of personality and influence outside the group. It might appease the public to have a big name, but that doesn't guarantee success.

Some of the most successful coaches, ie Woolmer, Hesson, Buchanan (argue the toss but he coached the most successful Test era of all time), Fletcher etc didn't need to have played a lot of international cricket to be successful. Other point being, the big name coaches - Ponting, Fleming, McCullum, Steyn, Lara, Donald, Jayawardene - are gravitating to the IPL and don't want to be on the road for 10 months a year.

There will be rain, just not enough for Australia to beat us. It's a proven fact we'd have won the last one held in a non-police state 5-0 if Anderson hadn't got injured on day 1.
You're very optimistic thinking England will bat long enough for rain to be a factor.

I hate Langer as much as the next guy but I actually thought it was cringe tbh.
The statement? What was cringe about it? I thought it was as outstanding as you'd get from a current player, let alone an international captain. Honest, acknowledged all the good that Langer did, but at the same time was very up front about why he was no longer the best fit for them. Didn't throw him under the bus, acknowledged he was intense - deflating the elephant in the room - and at the same time said thanks for your opinion former players, but I'll back my mates just as you are. Perfect.

The ex-players might have loyalty to their mate but they should also realise they have a bloke of the highest regard in that job - a humble, intelligent, highly skilled leader - and maybe they're best to shut the **** up. And also realise there are plenty of other players with a voice and an opinion in that side who would have been part of what's happened.

Most of it was alright, if not reeking a bit of PR bothsidesnothingspeak (of which I have become well acustomed to). The last line which was meant to be Le EpIc pWn seemed totally cringe to me though, even though as you can see from earlier in the thread I had little respect for the nonsense that came from the ex-players about it. Just would have worked much better without it IMO.

Fair enough. I, and others, thought that was the best line. Yep, you ex-players have had your loud opinion - just know that we're going to stick to ours in our group as well. I thought it was a great sign of the solidarity in that group.

And I also thought it was actually anti PR, but I guess that's only my viewpoint. I love the guy, so maybe that's coloured. I still love it every time I read it.

A PR spin would've been 'Justin Langer was a great coach and we won so much over him, but we've chosen to go in a different direction' without ever alluding to why. It was clear why in Cummins' post. They needed the intensity and the kick up the arse in 2018, but since then they have become a more cohesive, mature cricket side and they now need someone who can take them forward without the rollercoaster of emotions, the overthinking and just generally a new voice after this one had barked at them and blown smoke up their arse in equal amounts through COVID, big tours etc.

I didn't like the line either, but I guess he couldn't just state various stupid incidents from Langer.

Its because you don't have any friends to stick it up to
