I dont want to pile on poor cnerd here, I understand where he is coming from, but at the same time, it is a question of will and planning. If the ICC had the will to ensure they planned for the inevitable weather issues that come with hosting cricket in England, a back up venue and a plan B would have been in place. They could have started that process around the same time they decided to move to Southampton from Lords. Its their failure to even consider these things that annoys me.
Won't you think of the visa hassles though??? And the hotels!!! Pity poor ICC.

Fully agree. Only have to compare with the BCCI and its response everytime there have been issues with hosting the IPL. And while that may not be the fairest comparison with the sort of backing the IPL has, worth remembering for the 2nd edition in 2009 they moved the entire tournament to South Africa when security concerns were apparent.

The obvious solution is that the WTC final should have been a three test series. If you're going to all the trouble of organising a multi-year tournament to find the test world champion, it seems a little short sighted to put all those eggs in a single test basket. Not only is a series safer from the weather but it's more likely to find the real best team.

Most other sports don’t - it’s a one off final.
Except **** sports like basketball and baseball.

I remember a few years ago there was a huge storm in Brisbane on the Friday night they were meant to be playing the rugby league anzac test. So rather than play it in conditions that the police were telling people to stay home, they postponed it and played it Sunday afternoon instead (Kiwis had a big win, of course).

So adding an extra two days on would seem to be totally possible from that incident.

Having a back up venue seems slightly more unlikely to me, I have to say!

You can't compare test cricket to other sports, it's utterly unique and needs to be treated as such.

When I try to explain test cricket to my American friends and family they all stare at me in bewilderment and disbelief that anything that crazy could actually exist. My American wife was the same way, but here we are 15 years later and she is now an obsessive cricket fan. That's why test cricket is the greatest sport ever created.

Indian continent went barging in to have proper time zone. We can enjoy both WTC final and Euro cup without being awake at 3 am ?
euro cup? is that the inferior winter sport to rugby or something?

test cricket in england is a solid time zone tbh. can watch the first session then drift off to sleep during the second.

the west indies are by far the worst zone. 2am test match starts...

Fingers crossed we get a full days play today (though there’s some light showers forecast for the afternoon). Day 3 has a clear forecast as well. Day 4 will probably be washed out, and then days 5 and 6 look fairly good, with a few scattered showers. So if we’re lucky we might have about 350 overs of play, which with all the rain and stop-starts might be enough.

Where possible I think this whole fiasco means there should be a minimum overs requirement in lieu of a 5-day Test. Obviously there'd be some situations where the schedule would make that impossible, but it should be allowed for deciders at least.....
