Nah more obscure and more recent than Thorpe. Might just be the two names I mentioned that I'm thinking of, but it feels like there was someone else.

I'll remind everyone once again that CW is not a place for nationalistic dick-waving. Whether your team won or lost has absolutely no impact on your right to express your opinion on how a player performed, or whether that opinion is valid.
sounds like a new rule.

i hope people follow this.

This coming from an Aussie?
The point, as Marc alluded to, is that the Aussies have historically gone out and won after puff pieces like that. It's risky and I'm no fan of it but, well, the results spoke for themselves. Contrast that with SA; so often they've gone on to lose the next Test, followed by a flurry of 'How did that happen? Woe.' articles. Last time they beat Australia they did just shut up and win, even afterward the response was fairly muted. They did the job instead of telling anyone with a Zoom mic that they were gonna shove it up the oppo. **** like that just makes me hope they get schtonkered by England in the next Test.

So, as I said, just shut up and win. It's not that hard to just say "We're confident, see what happens." is it? If they were beating everyone it wouldn't be a problem but they've so often fallen flat on their face (especially after a big win in the first Test), damn, if they don't give the schadenfreudarians among us a lot to work with.....

Ed Smith: How did England go from great to godawful? | Opinion | Cricinfo Magazine | ESPN Cricinfo

I didn't quite agree with the article. Blaming England's loss to England playing excessive cricket?
I don't think it's a great excuse for this current result, but it does explain a lot of the results we have been seeing in world cricket.

The last two Ashes series, for example, have seen a heap of one-sided results, one way or the other. The Indians' past two away series, and how their performances have deteriorated as time went on.

By current I suppose you mean only this series, after all didn't England have a pretty good gap to prepare for series against Pakistan in the UAE?

Also they weren't too flash against SL either so I am not sure this is a great explanation for England's fortunes.

Weather's looking pretty gash for next few days. Shame if the forecasts are correct.
I think they should get away with minimal interruptions on Thursday and Friday, but it looks awful for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

This is not what England wants, as we are one down in the series we need the weather to play ball and give us the best chance to level the series. Don't want to wait until Lord's, as our record there is not the most inspiring.

England to win the next test btw. I can feel it coming, despite the best efforts of Steyn and Philander.

Smith, Amla and AB to go quick. Kallis to be left trying to work with Alviro and Rudolph when the ball is swinging i.e. those two are ****ed.
[ To Correct you : Steyn, Philander, Morkel, Kallis, Tahir ]

Sorry but i don't see that happening, unless England brings Shane Warne out of retirement and ask him for a favor ... ?

Not saying it will be an easy series from here onwards, but our bowlers just annihilated England on a batsmen friendly pitch, worst English defeat on record in 137 years, now we are going to play on a bowler friendly pitch, it will be heaven to them compared to the last match ...

Either side could win the next match, this series is more about will power, focus and determination, and i just see SA wanting it more, on the field and off. the guys are just so calm and relaxed right now, you can see it in their attitudes, Mentally i think they are more focused than England, and England will be playing under pressure next match, pressure of losing the title, pressure from press, pressure from fans, pressure from selectors and cricket board and so forth, if they bat well they can gain confidence again and build on that, but if they start out poorly well most likely see another collapse...

Gary is a brilliant coach, one of his major strengths is to build good mental focus, you can see the major transformation in the SA team since he took over.

My Money is on Kallis, Amla is a brilliant batsman, but i don't see him making hundreds every game, doubt he will do it again easily in this series, on the other hand Kallis has been getting more aggressive in the recent years, he seems more focused, mentally stronger, had he come out at no2 i'm sure he would have had the 300. He made getting 181 looks so easy...

O and for the guys bashing Morne Morkel, Just know he always takes a game or two to warm up, he is one of those players that gets better as he goes, and i hope after this series he will silence alot of the gay bashers in this forum.

Good luck to both Teams, but ill always back my boys ...

I'm hoping the next test is going to be an exciting one, Sa is now just one 1 game away from being World Champs, what an exciting thought, or a scary one depending on which side of the fence you are :)

Taste it, Smiley.

Damn, now I'm hungry. Seriously, is there any greater smell than mildly burnt toast? Time for a poll.
