Well, I've been in two minds about how much sleep to deprive myself of for these last two Tests. My mind is now made up, as much as possible, to watch Shane Warne, the master. Even though I obviously want us to win, I hope Warney takes a tenfer tbh.
Well said. My thoughts exactly.

Damnnnnnn the dreadfull day is almost here, All England will be jumping, plus opposition batsmen at this news..

But its kind surprising from Warne TBH (even thoough its not confirmed as yet), after the Ashes he has a long time for his next test series, he could even skip the Zimbabwe tour & give a young bloke a go & play at home next season.

Not official from McGrath, but i hope he stays on at least until the World Cup.

Overall i always felt McGrath might go first, but so be it. You are always going to miss someone of Pigeons skill & class but at this stage i think Australia can handle life without McGrath with the emergence of Clark & the good look of the some of the younger quicks. But without Warne its a problem with no young spinner steppin up, he would be a great guide to them. I guess they may give MacGill a go for a while, but he's no Warne..

But if Warne does go & won't be back here in 2009, the memory of seeing the master at Old Trafford 5 times live will be cherished, & not to forget Pigeon 4 times as well..

Absolutely shocking headline but it definitely makes sense ... was really looking forward to the Aussies touring India next year, but it won't be the same without the legends.

India might have a chance now in the series.

That defeats the purpose. Whenever India and Australia have played, something has been missing ... McGrath missing or Warne not at his best or Dravid not in his prime.
This really might have been a phenomenal series, but now it can only be a very good one at best.

Not really surprised to here Warne is retiring, a good way to go out IMO, while your still on top.

I wouldn't be surprised if McGarth, Hayden, Langer retire from Test Cricket as well. 11 months is a long time without a Test.

The story I saw said McGrath was likely to pull the pin after the World Cup, effectively making Sydney his farewell from Test cricket...

Anyone have any particular reason to think Hayden is about to retire?

Langer is plausible given the year off, though he's said he'll put it off to avoid a mass exodus from the team. Gilchrist is always on the cards, and he's been a good chance to go after the World Cup for some time. I don't think Hayden will retire that soon though. If anything, he seems desperate to get back into the ODI team, so I don't think he's looking for less cricket.

Man I'm devastated. The eyes and throat are swollen. I don't want to say much. I just hope he changes his mind, in his own Warne-like manner, and decides to keep on going. He's too much of a legend, the greatest.

IF he doesn't make the ODI team, then he will have 11 months off International Cricket anyway. But i could see Hayden and Langer playing on as you get the feeling they still have something to prove. i.e wining back the Ashes in 2009 in England. Also they have had more time out of the team then Gilchirst, McGarth and Warne who have only been dropped once or twice for short periods. But eleven months is a long time not playing International Cricket, i guess there would be good chance they would go to England if they not in the ODI team.

Either way, India will tour Australia two months later.
Same story there ... would've loved to watch all the legends in action (Dravid, Ponting, Tendulkar, Gilchrist, Laxman, McGrath, Kumble, Warne ... damn).

Warney was the best there ever was, I grew up watching this. He is a true legend of the sport, all of use who have seen him should count ourselves lucky that we got to see the greatest bowler in the history of the game. The same can be said of McGrath, though I don't have nearly the same connection with him as I do with Warney. Not only is Warney a Victorian, he's the reason I bowl Leg Spin.

Just catching up on my emails and CW threads for the morning and this was the last thing I expected to see - McGrath doesn't surprise me but Warney does, I honestly felt that he'd go on for a few more years yet, even going past 800 wickets or more.

The emotions are classically mixed, I wanted them both to go on forever - I was watching cricket for years before either of them were heard of, and yet the Australian team just won't seem the same without them now. This, to me, is a bigger loss than even when AB or Waugh retired, and at least comparable with the Lillee-Marsh-Chappell retirement of 83-84.

And yet, as many have mentioned, they've done what all great sportsmen should do - they've gone out at the top, on a winning note, on their own terms. And that's all you can ask from anyone. Their legends were never going to be really tarnished, but now they'll just grow.

The lads done well.
