*Unofficial* New Zealand Black Caps Thread

Immenso

International Vice-Captain
Kirsten quit as Pakistan white-ball coach, Gillespie still employed (at this stage) as test coach. But in 6 months time ... probably not.

On Sky Sport (UK) podcast. Simon Doull was on as the guest, and he mentioned that he had 'first hand knowledge' that for the next blackcaps coach (when Stead's contract expires in 6 months) that the NZC cheque book will be out and they are prepared to pay significantly more, and are wanting a top-notch / high profile candidate.
Kind of sounded like Williamson might be closer to the end than we thought too.

Call me a pessimist but I hope we actually choose someone with a quality method forward rather than just chase a big name. Hesson entering without preconceived ideas of what NZ is helped a bit.

Coaching is a vibes gig. It's not about the name, it's about someone who has
a) A clear vision for what they want to do with the team which is compatible with the resources available
b) The communication, organisational, and man-management skills to make that happen

We need someone who fits the realistic composition of the team over the next five years, which is going to be a lot of young guys, particularly on the bowling front.

Doull says a lot sometimes. Williamson will be in Australia come 26-27.
I think I've said this before, but I'm not particularly thrilled with a 36yo Williamson (who may or may not be past it) headlining a NZ team where half the squad is 34 or older. We're either hoping he's not washed in 2 years or hoping whoever succeeds him hits the ground running.
Maybe I'm being wildly optimistic about 26-7, but after sweeping India we can afford to be. If you can sweep India in India, Australia in Australia is just as tough, but hardly tougher. I think they could be vulnerable by then, with a similar profile to the current India side. I'm not sure if a Dad's Army team is the one for the job. If they're performing & the best we can put up, then great, but if not, then drop them for players who are better.

This is really intriguing.

How many coaches could we say are 'expensive' and we have to spend cash on? I can't think of too many. This isn't like buying a striker if you're Man United. Guys like Fleming, Hesson etc don't want to coach a national side 10 months a year. And who else would come, but cost is the thing? I feel like international coaches go where the opportunities are, over cash (Baz aside, who is probably paid a motza...but isn't short of a bean and took it for the challenge as much as anything).

So who are we talking...Kirsten? Langer?

This is 100% spot on. Coaching cricket isn't an exercise in superior tactics or even technique if you're the head coach (you get good specialist coaches for this). It's man management, environment, expectations, standards, some tactics, identifying talent and being patient/daring enough to back it...it's being a strong person as much as anything.

I think NZ should get Andre Adams
Yup, we should. Andre is a quality person and knows technique in and out. Really, really good mentor who players respond to.
