The saddest part about this series for the West Indies is that we could have won it 3-2 if there was more application on the middle overs of the 2nd and 3rd match. I'm that's what Bennett King would be telling them now.

Good to see Bravo return with some runs and always good to see Ramdin play well. I hear he kept brilliantly too.

.
The saddest part for New Zealand is they could have had a 5-0 sweep if they showed more application today

BARNES OUT
Am I to assume Lewis played as a batsman?! Unless he was the super sub [I can't be bothered looking] and has a decent amount of skill with the bat and was subbed in for the hell of it.

He was subbed on for Edwards, because he's not as hopeless with the bat as Edwards is.

Vincent given the boot.

By NZPA staff
Auckland, March 5 NZPA - The New Zealand cricket selectors threw a curve ball today in naming an untested opening pair for the first test against West Indies starting here on Thursday.
Coach John Bracewell named the 13-man squad for the first of three tests with the major talking point being the opening combination of Jamie How and Hamish Marshall.
How will make his debut, while Marshall, who has only regained some form late in the summer is a recognised middle-order batsman.
The surprise omission was that of incumbent test opener Lou Vincent who scored a century in the fourth one-day match against West Indies in Napier on Wednesday.
Less than 12 months ago Vincent scored a double-century against Sri Lanka and also made 92 in his last test innings as opener against Zimbabwe.
Bracewell said Vincent did not want to be considered as an opening batsman and wanted to play in the middle-order, but they could not accommodate him.
Canterbury batsman Peter Fulton, who made his one-day debut in December alongside How, will also gain his first test at Eden Park.
The remainder of the squad is the nucleus of the side which won the one-day series 4-1 after last night's three-wicket victory by the tourists.
Pace bowler Chris Martin has rejoined the squad while offspinner Jeetan Patel has pushed out incumbent Paul Wiseman for the second spinner's position.
Squad: Stephen Fleming (captain), Jamie How, Hamish Marshall, Peter Fulton, Nathan Astle, Scott Styris, Brendon McCullum, James Franklin, Kyle Mills, Daniel Vettori, Jeetan Patel, Shane Bond, Chris Martin.
Two players will be omitted on the morning of the first test to play domestic cricket.

Vincent averaged well over 40 in tests last year. I can't believe it.

I like Marshall opening, I guess it's better then flem.

I hope he plays the role of "Rock" and just stays in.

Jamie How
Hamish Marshall
Peter Fulton
Stephen Fleming
Scott Styris
Nathan Astle
Brendon McCullum
Daniel Vettori
James Franklin
Shane Bond
Kyle Mills/Jeetan Patel/Chris Martin. - Not really sure who they will play in this spot

If we maintain this lineup we're going to get absolutely killed on the tour of South Africa.

Chris Martin? WHAT?
Peter Fulton? WHAT?
Hamish Marshall? WHAT? OPENING?

On what is probably a typical Eden Park pitch, Patel and Vettori will definately play I'd say with Mills and Bond the seamers.

It would be. But Who opens? I have a bad feeling Vincent will be told to open, again. :(

It looks like he was told to and he turned round and said no.

Fair enough IMO, could be a good decision in the long run.

Kyle Mills - 4 tests, 3 wickets @ 91.00

He's a good ODI bowler but seriously.

Chris Martin - had another poor season for Auckland. He's Paul Wiseman's twin for me.
Hamish Marshall - he's not an opener, don't care if he's batted three. He isn't an opener. What's happened to Papps and Cumming?
Peter Fulton - how can he be selected over Vincent? How?
Kyle Mills - he isn't a test bowler! Just look at his stats! Averages 91 with the ball!

I honestly can't quite believe this squad.

I actually don't have too many issues with the squad other than Chris Martin being in there and Vincent not.

Opening with Marshall could be a masterstroke.

We don't have too many other options though do we?

Our batting depth seems to be getting greater and greater, now we need some young bowlers to come through.
