Vettori is a world class player. Why should an under performing Pollock be chosen before him?
Because I don't like the balance of the bowling attack. Surely you're not claiming Pollock isn't a World-class player?

Just been watching a few highlights (I didn't make it up for the actual play!) & the ball looked to be doing quite a bit first thing. What I really couldn't believe tho is no Pollock?! That's a, er, strange call. Kallis as first change? Hmm. With a team that bats right down to 9 surely one of the specialist bats could've been sacrificed? Pollock is hardly a mug with the bat either.

Not wishing to suggest any skulbuggery, but with Shoaib getting the boot & Inzi (probably) the most likely to make way, was Polly's omission a bit political? It would've left no Pakistanis in the XI.

Big return to form from Hayden & Gilly. I haven't seen too much of either innings (proper highlights in about 3 and a half hours), but the tiny snippet I saw showed Hayden playing & missing a fair bit. He clearly has a weakness against swing, which just makes Pollock not being there even more bizarre. If Hayden survives the initial burst, the pressure is off him with dear, unwilling, half-ar$ed Kallis as first change.

Great points BB. And with the ball doing what it`s doing, somehow I don`t think we`ll see the sixth day.

Thoughts on the first day.

1. World X1 were lucky that McGrath didnt have first use of the wicket.

2. Hayden was excellent.

3. Ponting - you idiot.

4. Gilchrist - genius.

5. Technology

Based on the evidence we saw (and Im led to believe that we see everything that the 3rd umpire does):

a. Hayden was out padding up to Harmy (fortunately given not out as Hawkeye shows the ball going over the top);

b. Clarke - horrible decision (didnt hit it from any angle);

c. Katich - great decision (past the crease but bat in the air);

d. Watson - great decision (unlikely to be given out without technology); and

e. Murali - confirmed chucker (appalling that he is allowed to bowl).

This certainly doesnt have the same flavour as a regular test match... theres somthing missing, like somebody else said. I even fell asleep at one point.

Gee, Clarke looked amazing today. What an absolute shame he got out when he did.

The snickometer showed that he had hit the ball.. and tv replays arent always conclusive.
Last month in SL one replay showed that a ball hit the bat and went to the slips on the full. But another replay proved that it had hit the ground before before going to the fielder.
This happened coz the frame was missing when the ball hit the ground and same thing happened here.

Snicko suggested that he didnt hit it!

Given what the public saw (and Im only assuming that the 3rd umpire doesnt have another angle), there is no way that it was out.

Anyway, despite all the technology, would the result have been any different.

With the naked eye:

1. Hayden - out

2. Clarke - out

3. Katich - not out

4. Murali - horrible

End result - 2 wickets, 1 illegal bowling action same as technology just different players

Completely agree really. But poor Murali.

Kerry O'Keefe was of the opinion on ABC radio this morning that Pathan should have played as he felt you always need a left arm pace bowler against Australia.

Common sense is of the opinion that Pathan averages over 47 in Tests against teams other than Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. England did fine against Australia without a left-arm seamer, anyway.

Confirms that he is an idiot. A funny idiot, but an idiot none the less.

Oh and Vaas happens to be a left arm bowler, and someone far superior to Pathan.
