Awesome knock by the maestro Lara but Smith you're my man.
Can anybody please tell me why we conceded 5 penalty runs yesterday? And what was all that bit about the umpire not seeing a catch? Something to do with Boje, I think.. I unfortunately missed seeing some of the play.
The penalty runs were down to a throw from the outfield hitting a helmet.

I don't recall the umpires missing a catch - there was an instance where a noise was heard on stump-cam as the ball went past (or possibly hit) the outside edge, but there seemed to be a slight gap between bat and ball. What appeals there were sounded very unconvincing to say the least. If neither bowler nor keeper seem that enthusiastic, it's unlikely the umpires would be.

Maybe it's not the incident you're talking about.

P.S. If Chanderpaul never skippers the West Indies again, it'll still be too soon. I have never seen a less inspiring leader in 40 years of watching this game.

Much thanks, Scaly Piscine (UB40?) and Luckyeddie. Must be that incident, Boje probably the bowler. I thought only when the bowler bowls and the wickie misses and the ball goes past and hits a helmit, can 5 runs be awarded.

Mr M's wishes for the West Indies leadership:

Wavell Hinds
Reon King

Both have excellent cricketing brains, are calm characters and I would think they'd only be made better by the added responsibility. Hinds in particular strikes me as captaincy material.

Reon King impressed me greatly today. Throughout the day the bowlers were fairly tight, but King always seemed to be knocking on the door, especially in the afternoon session. He had Prince dropped by Pagon at midwicket (not sure how Pagon managed that!) and constantly made me wonder, how is Ashwell Prince still at the crease? That's not why I consider him captaincy material though. It's more to do with his grasp of the game, perserverance and clear intelligence.

Whatever it takes!!!
yeah, but maybe they should listen to Mike Atherton and drop Lara as well........Obviously, he is the reason why Windies are so bad at the moment.... 8-)

With West Indies' bowlers struggling, every chance had to be taken, and it was harder for Donovan Pagon at midwicket to drop a mistimed hook from Prince off King than it was for him to catch it, but he managed.

How do you think Gayle would go as captain? Too volatile?

Are Sa the slowest scoring team in test cricket atm?
Some people were critisising nz when we were going at 3.5 when we scored 500. Yet in a dominant position sa are going at less than 2.5 and over??
Surely they should be trying to advance this game quicker.
Looking like a good contest at the moment, hopefully the windies don't fold in the next innings.

How are the bowlers like for the windies? Any one impressive?

Its annoying following this on cricinfo, would have like to watch the series.

Three quick wickets from Gayle, nice-looking figures: 35-17-46-3. 392/9 now, still a slight chance of a result either way.

a very quick change around in this one....If WI get off to a goodish start, ie no wickets down for 50 by lunch, I put WI as slight faves...good stuff

4-50 for Gayle, not a bad effort. Still going to be very difficult for WI to force a win though. Even if they go at 4 an over for the rest of the day, the overall lead will be less than 260ish, and they wouldn't really feel comfortable declaring with that. I guess their first priority will be to ensure that they don't put themselves in a vulnerable position; bat normally today and see if there is any chance of a result tomorrow.

4/50 and 20 runs in 2 innings.

Chris Gayle - now a rabbit spin bowler. ;)
20 runs in 2 innings? Try 7 (runs, not innings). :( Gayle's not been himself this year (though a pessimist might argue that he has been more himself than ever).

Oops. Saw 14/1 and added 14 to the 6 in his first. 'Course, he didn't hit them all...

8.5 Nel to Hinds, no run, 2 lips, gully point and short cover, goes
short, Hinds ducks, just clears the helmet as it stays down a bit
:p :p :p

I dont think King would be active enough in the field.. He is such a liability and fast bowlers are rarely captains
