I'd like to know where you get those figure from, because they don't stack up with his Cricinfo ones.

In 2003 he played 23 matches and in 2004 so far it's 11 (which makes as close to 35 a dammit)

In that time he's got 1011 runs at 38.88 and 34 wickets at 26.03

Good figures I grant you, but nowhere near what you claim!

Also, I would have said he's playing as a batsman who can fill in 5 or 6 overs, rather than a genuine all rounder.
Sorry wrong figures then.

Styris is upto the same level of Cairns in terms of batting in ODIs. He has averaged 57 in his last 35 games. Not bad. And he has averaged 22 with the ball as well.

Styris is a very shaky batsman early on, but when he gets going, he's a wonderful sight.

Yes I also think Oram will be a champion allrounder some day, but he needs to bat inside the Top 6 consistently to do so.
yes, once styris gets going he is magnificent in every aspect of the word(see his 131 against sri lanka, world cup? 101 (I beleive) against pakistan?)but he tends to think hes playing baseball at the start of the innings.

kiwi crciket have improved a lot and i think it is mainly due to Stephen Fleming (kiwis correct me if i am wrong)

I like his captancy. he leads from the front. and he is responsible for bringing the kiwi crciket to this level :cool2:

I think John Bracewell has been the key aswell...he seems to have things well planned out.

lol first ball Ross Taylor faces off Nel he hits him for 4.

He's now up to 12 off 11 with 3 fours...a good start, hopefully he can keep going.

styris will never be the bowler that chris cairns was. granted styris is a good batsman but he will only be known as a batsman who could bowl not as a classic all rounder because his bowling is nothing to ride home about.
oram can be a great all rounder but he needs to be consistent and needs to bat better outside of home

Taylor had the chance to let Nel win a good over today, but paid for the big macho option instead. You have to wonder if the like of Mark Greatbatch and Craig Spearman are a great influence for a young guy like that!

To be fair the disdain McMillan showed f/c bowlers as a teenager probably demanded him an early entrance to international cricket, a bit like raw pace often gets a bowler jumping queues. The NZ camp could probably develop a talent like Taylor quickly (they have been trying to do that in important matches with Butler after all), but our batting just isn't in a 'build for the future' phase right now. Back in the mid-90's it definitely was, so Ross should just forget the press he might be trying to live up to and bide his time, both at the crease and career-wise.

Sinclair on the other hand played pretty well. I did call for him to bring a little more grit and stamina to NZ's middle-order for this series, but we'll give Styris, McMillan, Cairns, Oram and McCullum the chance they deserve. Providing that donkey doesn't keep doing himself in, it's their job to prevent Fleming being 70* with Chris Martin walking out to bat.

Wow,Cairns,Astle and Fleming are all in there 30's.They will be gone in about 5 years,if we're lucky.Cairns will go soon, hes 33,coming on 34.
So long as they're in form, they'll stick around. :) I don't see Fleming running out of gas in the next few years, although I must admit Cairns and Astle are pushing age, consistency and injury to the limit. Fleming seems to be fine so far, though. I think they used to be training McMillan to be the next captain. I wonder who that'll end up being now...

I'm also surprised at how well CD are doing. Should be interesting.

McMillan doesn't seem to have the ability to lead from the front often enough with either bat or ball...he seems to be more interested in scoring runs or taking wickets for himself rather than the team (not all the time, but you get the feeling it's like that) & so he'd make a horrendous captain, im glad NZ have also worked that out.

IMO I think NZ Cricket have got their eye on either Jacob Oram or Daniel Vettori to replace Fleming, probably after the 2007 World Cup.

The thing is though...that NZ have gotten so used to having to play without players like Astle & Cairns that I don't think it'll really be as big a problem as it could have been had the 2 of them remained injury free & then for NZ Cricket to suddenly have to bring in 2 or 3 new players.

Once again disappointing, it appears he has alot to learn when it comes to building an innings.
But still positive to see that he can play the same way against South Africa that he's done all season in the domestic fixtures.

Surprised to see this thread untouched with some interesting stories around.

http://www.news24.com/News24/Sport/Cricket/0,,2-9-839_1495238,00.html

"Speechless amazement.

That was Graeme Smith and company's initial reaction on Monday to the barren batting strip on which the first cricket Test against New Zealand is to be played here from Wednesday.

More than 330 millimetres of rain fell here last month, and that has made it very difficult for the ground staff to prepare a good pitch. Clay from the south island will be used for the first time in the playing surface at Westpac Park.

"This is ridiculous. All statistics related to previous matches at this venue can be ignored now," said the SA captain. "I can't tell you what one should expect (from the pitch)."

NZC CEO Martin Snedden has pretty much walked on water up until now, but surely he has to be blasted if this pitch is as bad as some say it will be. From my understanding they had every chance to shift this game to Napier. If it's just a slow turner that will be fine, but home tests are too precious to waste on an untested, potentially rubbish pitch.

And can someone tell me what Mark Boucher's on about? What's Fleming said or done that's so offensive?

If Smith was stuffing around stalling my bowler's rythym, I'd have sledged him too. Regardless of how many people are moving around the sightscreen - 15 minutes for a first over is absolutely unacceptable.

NZ should be taking a long look at Hamilton as a test venue...for 3 or 4 years now the pitches have been substandard there due to poor weather or various other reasons.

I think the only reason why Hamilton is used because it's one of the few grounds in NZ that looks like a test venue.

NZ Cricket perhaps need to consider playing some tests in the South Island where they may get more sun.

I saw those comments by Boucher and I think all South Africa are trying to do is get under Fleming's skin.

It may look the part, but I can't really see Hamilton's attraction to NZC. It's not like they get outstanding crowds, McLean Park isn't exactly unsightly, and Christchurch (clearly NZ's cricket capital) having no tests since 2002 is really odd IMO.

Weren't there plans to get either Hagley or Lincoln up to test standard a while back?
