Don't anyone try to tell me that our bowling to tail-enders isn't a huge problem. 450/9. This is absolutely embarrassing.

Nel has a batting average of 1.5 for crying out loud (or at least before this innings). It just isn't good enough to allow batsmen 9 & 10 to be involved in 40 or 50 run partnerships.

102/2 at stumps...Michael Papps was superb unbeaten on 50.
Papps & Styris need to get NZ to the follow on mark at least & then NZ as a whole need to make sure they get at least 350 so that this game doesn't get too out of control for them.

Richardson didn't really look like he was going to score any runs & Fleming kind of tied himself down & got undone by what I thought was a pretty good piece of bowling by Paul Adams.

Papps looks great.Unsettling at the start (dropped catch, clonk on the helmet)but he seems to be set now.

I really don't see this test being anything but a draw.

I'm not overly concerned.

We didn't bowl to the tailenders much at the end especially in the last wicket partnership, it was mainly Kirsten.

We had a lot of chances, but put them down. On another day they will stick.

Let's hope they leave the Richardson dismissal off the breakfast news highlights in the UK. Richard will appear soon with a short, smug little post otherwise!

As I hoped, Papps looks the test side's most important addition since Bond. Would you play him at somewhere like Perth or Jo'burg though?

I still have a few doubts, and it's interesting to hear through Neil Manthorp that the SA players don't rate him at all, saying he's way too one-dimensional. I guess getting hit in the grill on a dunger gives them a bit of vindication, but 50* on debut doesn't.

Papps one dimensional?

I think after the game today, he showed us that he isn't only a front foot player. He played some exquiste cuts and pulls today, marvellous to watch. Those cover drives reminded me of Fleming's drives. Pleasing to watch.

Marshall, I am still unconvinced because his technique has serious flaws. I hope he's not another Sinclair/Vincent.

As for Papps, I think he's going to have a huge future for NZ Cricket. However he still has to sort out his duck (he leaves his bat in the air) and his ability to play the short pictched deliveries.

But Richardson has an extremely high first chance average. That means his absolute gibberish career average of 49 means nothing.

There's no doubt Papps has a nice range of shots. A bit like Astle, he seems to play a lot of cuts and pulls by pushing back off his front foot. Obviously the SA camp think they'll eat him for breakfast if they ever strike him in their neck of the woods, but if they go overboard tomorrow on this pitch he could be the 4th NZ batsman in just over 4 years to score a century on test debut.

I get the feeling SA believe each time they get Fleming their hardest work is done, but they'd be fools to underrate Papps, Styris and McMillan on a pitch like this. Styris in particular seems like his respect for their attack is on a par with Bangladesh!

The next two sessions are a good chance to be the most exciting of the test, regardless of who dominates them.

Has Butler done enough in Queenstown already, d'ya think? Not so much for our liking, but what you think the selectors will do.

Chris Martin must be a strong chance if they drop Wiseman, but I'm wondering if Butler's extra 5k's of pace and recent contact with Bracewell both at Gloucester and in the Pakistan series will give him an edge.

This is interesting. The last three centuries at Westpac Park (Vettori, Moin Khan and Kirsten) have all been scores of 137. I wonder if that's happened before.

There's no point in selecting Wiseman for Test anymore.

1. Fleming doesn't bowl him enough

2. He's showed he isn't capable at the international level.

What a rough LB decision on Papps.

Clearly struck outside off IMO - the only reason Smith and Crowe thought otherwise is a prediction coming true makes them look good as analysts!

The second reason doesn't have something to do with the first?

McMillan just worsened his first-chance average I think. I'm sure Richard would tell you Percy H. Poselthwaite and co. would've taken that catch every time back in the 30s!

I think this pitch is getting worse for run-scoring, and SA have their tactics well set. Things don't look great for NZ, and a draw looks like a very creditable result from here.

NZ in deep trouble...225/6..they still need another 30 or so runs to avoid the follow on.

The selectors need to start using their brains....IMO forget about playing both Oram & Cairns, we need another specialist batsmen in there & we need to also forget about playing a 2nd spinner just because its turning because Wiseman is clearly not up to standard.

Mason should have been playing & we definately need some more batting stability in the middle order.

Your quick to react and pass judgement. Why not wait until the end of the match? And who is to say another batsmen would achieved anything? Or maybe the batsmen got themselves out. If a player doesnt preform in that game, blame the player not the selector.
