I like the look of Cook. A few chances today obviously, but he's obviously a very talented batsman with a good technique. Definately someone I'm a bit more worried about in Australia this year than, say, Strauss or Bell.

Good innings from Collingwood too, though he doesn't exactly fill one with fear.

Brilliant stuff from Colly, completely dominated the bowling up til tea, been a bit out of touch since but has kept going.

How would you guys rate Kaneria efforts today?
Fairly disappointing from what I've seen. Obviously a bit unlucky, but the batsmen have generally been pretty assured against him, aside from the odd wrong'un.

the guy on the BBC online commentary is an absolute pile, trys to be funny and then makes stupid comments. There was a stupid comment like "there's Douglas Hurd smiling in the crowd, I guess he musn't know about the rhyming slang that goes with his name" they've now changed it to get rid of the second part.

However the ones that got me were his complaining about Englands batsmen scoring slowly(this was before tea when the run rate was over 4) and saying stuff like "Collingwood, perhaps aware that virtually the whole pavilion is now asleep, livens things up with two fours pulled over midwicket and moves on to 70." Given that England have made a habit out of ruining good starts by in part trying to score too quickly its a pretty stupid attitude to take imo.

On the cricket front, seems a bit of a sloppy day all round, plenty of missed chances, an bad decision or two either way but with 7 or 8 overs left it looks a decent days play for England.

I agree I think he's a great young player for England. He looks a little out of touch and having a little trouble with Kaneria, lucky to be in still. However he's still scoring runs which is a redeeming quality when you're not at your best.

Excellent day of play for England.. would be quite happy with their efforts..
Cooky and Colly getting Centuries and still there to resume, what more can a captain ask for..

Very average standard of test cricket

Fielding - horrible

Bowling - average (why didnt Afridi bowl more?)

Cook - massive disappointment after looking so good in sub-continent

Colly - struggled on

Set the tone for the series for mine

The man is 101 not out, in the middle of a huge 221 run partnership, and you call it a 'massive dissapointment'.

That is the biggest WTF statement I've heard in a long time.

well he should have been out about 4 times including on 0. He didn't look in great touch the passage i saw, but i suppose he is still there.

Didn't have to wait long for the second one:

Colly - struggled on
Struggled for about half an hour after tea, was in complete control up til then and was safe enough thereafter.

What an absolute brilliant fight back by England. I left to go to a family dinner at around 100-3 with Pietersen recently out and Pakistan on top, and return to see Collingwood and Cook have put on a great 200 run partnership. England in a good position now.

I don't really care if that was Don Bradman batting. If someone is 101 not out on the first day of cricket, in the middle of a 221 run partnership, there is no way it can be a 'massive dissapointment'.

Yeah, it was by no means inspiring stuff from either batsman, and the attack was pretty lacklustre and plenty of chances were given, but there's no way that a double century stand can be disappointing. They both made centuries and that's what they are there to do, not look good whilst doing it.

Great start by Eng. At first, I thought the second string Pak attack was going to defy everyone's expectations and do something special. But then, with the help of Pak's fielding, the batsmen got set and took charge. If Pak do not get early wickets tom, Eng can really stamp their authority on this test.

We are in trouble

I was concerned that we will find it tough to take 20 wickets but now it seems even 10 will be an achievment with this attack
