Brad Haddin and Wade Seccombe are the backup Australian keepers. Justin Langer is not a wicket keeper, and he never will be a wicket keeper because he is not a wicket keeper and Australia would not bring in a non-wicket keeper to be a wicket keeper in a Test Match.

The selectors may be stupid, but not THAT stupid...

Justin langer actually debuted as a wicketkeeper for australia in odi's

On an old game of International cricket captain, Langer is rated a batsman and wicketkeeper. So I assume he can keep pretty well.

International 12th Man
the backup odi keeper in recent years has been jim maher, and maybe brad haddin. ryan campbell fell away badly in odi's for some reason...

the aussie selectors are so selfish, why call up two people when there is no chance of them playing(lets face it) unless there is an injury(which there hasn't been AFAIK), good that they gave brett lee a chance to play for NSW but now they have taken the opportunity away from two more players, better just call one person up and tell them there is a very high chance you will be 12th man and take it from there

Hohns also gave MacGill the thumbs-up. "Stuart gives us the ability to play two spinners if needed".

oh yep, he needs to stop kidding himself there's no way he would change the bowling department bar injury

Been through this - Watson is a far better player in the longer version.

I find it interesting that Katich was left out of a squad of 13, especially with Watson in it. My imagination is running away with me; I'm hoping that Lehmann is dropped and Watson plays as batting cover for him and an extra seam bowling option. You couldn't do worse than Lehmann at the moment for batting, so if you get a bowler out of it as bonus, why not? :D

I think they have included Watson because if they decide to go with two spinners and therefore drop a paceman they will want Watson as the third seamer, which will mean that Lehmann will be dropped for Watson.

I still think the selectors will go with the same XI.

Yeah in all likelihood the team will be unchanged. As I said, it was just me thinking wishfully. The big clue is that Lehmann is still in the squad. If he was going to be dropped, he'd be out of the squad, end of story.

Yeah, I just hope Watson isn't named 12th man so he can be released to play for Queensland.

Actually if you checked Langer's profile at cricinfo.com, this is what it would say
Full Name: Justin Lee Langer
Born: 21 November 1970, Perth, Western Australia
Major Teams: Australia, Middlesex, Western Australia.

Batting Style: Left Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium
Other: Wicketkeeper
Uncle: Langer, RS;

Yes, but I doubt Langer even keeps a pair of wicketkeeping gloves in his kitbag, and I also doubt he has kept wickets in any form of the game (excluding charity) in the last 5 years.

Well, Langer did wicket-keep in the ODI against Sri Lanka in 1994 and caught one catch. The link is on page 94

If they were dropping Lehmann, they wouldn't have picked Watson though would they?

Trescothick has kept in ODI's, but that doesn't make him anything more than a back-up keeper in an emergency, certainly not one to give the gloves to for a Test!

He wouldn't be a direct replacement for Lehmann, but if they decide to go with 2 spinners then Watson would be likely to replace Lehmann to give Australia a 3rd seamer.
