It has been 12 long years since Otago last made a domestic one-day semifinal play-off match but its prospects of breaking the drought were boosted with its six-wicket win over Wellington at the Basin Reserve on Saturday.
Otago took just 45.1 overs to overhaul Wellington’s modest total of 227 for eight to move into second place in the competition with 19 points from seven matches.
Central leads the State Shield with 22 points, Canterbury is in third place on 18 and Wellington has been relegated to fourth spot on 17 points.
Up until now, talk of making the semifinal round has not gone down well. But with Otago within a win or two of clinching a play-off spot, coach Mike Hesson has broken the silence.
“I think everyone is pretty aware of it,” Hesson said.
“We’ve always been underestimated and every game we go into we are always the underdog and that does not seem to change even though we keep putting in good performances.”
But Hesson said that might change as the belief in his side continues to grow.
“We played together well and we play for each other and there is a lot of belief in everyone’s ability.
“Losing players like Greg [Todd] and Jeff [Wilson] gives players opportunities to lose belief . . . but someone else has always stepped up and done the job.
“I’d be very surprised if a lot of our guys don’t make the New Zealand A tour because, looking at what is around, we do have some really good players and it is about time some people started taking notice of us.”
Otago’s James McMillan bowled a topclass first spell removing both Wellington’s openers Jesse Ryder and Chris Nevin.
He also troubled Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming, beating him outside the off stump on numerous occasions.
However, Fleming (45) survived and then combined with Michael Parlane (31) for a third-wicket partnership of 68. All-rounder Jonathan Trott secured the crucial wicket of Fleming and then removed both the Parlane brothers as Wellington collapsed to 111 for five. But the capital side rallied through captain Matthew Bell, who assumed the anchor role with an unbeaten innings of 67. James Franklin also chipped in a useful 32 before McMillan shattered his stumps. The lanky left-arm bowler also struck early, during Otago’s reply, removing Chris Gaffaney without scoring. But Aaron Redmond (63) combined with captain Craig Cumming (40) in a 77-run second-wicket partnership to steady the ship.
Trott played a patient innings of 43 and Neil Broom hit an unbeaten 48 to see Otago home.
Otago plays bottom of the table Auckland on January 25 at Eden Park Outer Oval and then finishes off the round robin with two home games against Central Districts and Northern Districts.
