Otago coach Mike Hesson has a little dig at NZ ''A'' selectors and opposition coaches

Otago tantalisingly close to semis spot

• Cricket

By Adrian Seconi and John Fitzharris

It has been 12 long years since Otago last made a domestic one-day semifinal play-off match but its prospects of breaking the drought were boosted with its six-wicket win over Wellington at the Basin Reserve on Saturday.
Otago took just 45.1 overs to overhaul Wellington’s modest total of 227 for eight to move into second place in the competition with 19 points from seven matches.
Central leads the State Shield with 22 points, Canterbury is in third place on 18 and Wellington has been relegated to fourth spot on 17 points.
Up until now, talk of making the semifinal round has not gone down well. But with Otago within a win or two of clinching a play-off spot, coach Mike Hesson has broken the silence.
“I think everyone is pretty aware of it,” Hesson said.
“We’ve always been underestimated and every game we go into we are always the underdog and that does not seem to change even though we keep putting in good performances.”
But Hesson said that might change as the belief in his side continues to grow.
“We played together well and we play for each other and there is a lot of belief in everyone’s ability.
“Losing players like Greg [Todd] and Jeff [Wilson] gives players opportunities to lose belief . . . but someone else has always stepped up and done the job.
“I’d be very surprised if a lot of our guys don’t make the New Zealand A tour because, looking at what is around, we do have some really good players and it is about time some people started taking notice of us.”
Otago’s James McMillan bowled a topclass first spell removing both Wellington’s openers Jesse Ryder and Chris Nevin.
He also troubled Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming, beating him outside the off stump on numerous occasions.
However, Fleming (45) survived and then combined with Michael Parlane (31) for a third-wicket partnership of 68. All-rounder Jonathan Trott secured the crucial wicket of Fleming and then removed both the Parlane brothers as Wellington collapsed to 111 for five. But the capital side rallied through captain Matthew Bell, who assumed the anchor role with an unbeaten innings of 67. James Franklin also chipped in a useful 32 before McMillan shattered his stumps. The lanky left-arm bowler also struck early, during Otago’s reply, removing Chris Gaffaney without scoring. But Aaron Redmond (63) combined with captain Craig Cumming (40) in a 77-run second-wicket partnership to steady the ship.
Trott played a patient innings of 43 and Neil Broom hit an unbeaten 48 to see Otago home.
Otago plays bottom of the table Auckland on January 25 at Eden Park Outer Oval and then finishes off the round robin with two home games against Central Districts and Northern Districts.
I hope we can get a couple of batsmen, Hoppie and either of the Macs in the ''A'' team.

The unversity oval pitch is the best one day batting track in the country!

I thought the game was bloody fantastic for a twenty over block bash, the crowd was the biggest I had ever seen at a domestic cricket match as there was around 5000 there. Cumming got shown up as a player with a very limited shot repatoire. While Gaffney, McCullum and Taylor showed alot of innovation with their shots. Taylor smacked Trott into the leith twice in a row, they were two massive hits!

Gaffney is now the only player to have scored a hundred in every form of the game that has been played domestically. His innings was for the most pure cricket, he didn't try to hit over the top to often just played good shots.

Auckland are such a joke its not funny. They're 16/3. Franklin has bowled really well though which is good to see.

Yeah, I was surprised by that. He was only out for 2 weeks, but anyway..thats good because he'll get a bit of time to bat again ahead of the West Indies series.

Auckland have too many bowlers in that side. We are one specialist batsman short, and we have to bring in one of McIntosh or Horne to add stability to the top order. We played 7 bowlers today not including Styris.

Sometimes I am baffled by these selections to be honest, why select Lance Shaw when he won't bowl seeing his batting is pretty much useless? Happened with McKay last season, and it's repeating again. Shocking. Sack the coach.

Why sack the coach?

You guys do well in the 4 dayers which is more important.

Although I agree Auckland are their own worst enemy at times. The fact that Macintosh can't get a run is laughable particuarly as he just scored a ton in the domestic a tournament.

Sack the coach because no man with a right mind will pick 7 specialist bowlers and not use one of them. It's ludicrious that Shaw played today.

what the heck? Barnett is only 22 or something and he's decided to play for Canada. Interesting.

I've seen him on TV recently. He's quite imposing at the crease, and he looks like he's got some potential as an opener. Im not sure why he's gone and made himself available for Canada when there's every chance that with a bit of work he could make the NZ team eventually.
