*Official* NZ Domestic Season

Nope.

It'll be interesting to see who the selectors go for when Sri Lanka arrive late December. I reckon if the Marshall brothers don't fire in the next 2 ODI;s, they'll be out of the team. Possibly Franklin too because he's not really an ODI bowler it seems.

Fleming will return, and then I think we could see Jesse Ryder & Peter Fulton introduced which would be a nice change because they're both attacking batsmen who are developing good records.

Bowling is a big concern. Butler is out for the season, Tuffey is still struggling with injury and there just doesn't seem to be too many more options about right now.
Spin bowling is ok with Vettori. Patel is decent but I rate Bruce Martin higher and I reckon Tim Lythe is a player to watch this season, he is a good off-break bowler who hasn't got a chance because Brooke Walker was Auckland Captain.

Vettori will be good value I think. He's going to bring experience to the side, his batting at FC level should be good for around #8 or #9 and his bowling is on the improve all the time.
I fully expect him to be at least a place higher than that.

Giles tended to bat around 6 when he was a regular.

Good to see Tim McIntosh back and scoring runs. He was out for 101 today. Was a potential test opener not so long ago but decided to move to Canterbury due to Aucklands over-populated batting and had a horrendous run of form.

A good season could see him re-emerge..and how nice would that be considering how desperate we are for a few quality openers.

Do you know how old Tim Lythe is? I know he's the captain of his club side, but I haven't been able to find his age anywhere on the net. Certainly made an impressive first class debut, made some handy runs with the bat and two useful wickets.

I'm optimistic that Hamish Marshall will return to some kind of form during these next two games, and finally break his lean trot. I like the look of Jesse Ryder, and he would be a good addition to the middle order of the ODI side, if McCullum is promoted. Fulton deserves another chance, his sole opportunity was against Bangladesh opening the innings, a position where he hadn't play much if any at first class level before.

I think we will have enough quality bowlers for both ODIs and Tests for the summer, the issue is more than batting. Chris Martin I think should be given the nod in Bond's absence, and his 'similarity' to Bond in that he swings it away from the left handers is handy. His accuracy has also improved since his last appearances in the one-day arena. So the Test attack will probably have Bond and Martin opening, with Franklin and Mills competing for the 3rd seamer spot assuming Oram will be the batting allrounder at 6 or 7. But of course, it's still wide open over who will open the Test batting, with my belief that Fleming should open simply because there is no one else.

I've always liked the look of Tim McIntosh, adds abit of solidarity to the top of any batting order. He would be my dark horse at present to open alongside either Fleming or Cumming. And please don't open with Vincent, because he is a bloody middle order batsman and he has proved that with big scores batting at 4/5/6.

T Lythe 63 on debut and was meant to come out at 8th but came out last night when they needed a nigh****chman. Pretty good start. I have always been a fan of Aaron Redmond I hope he has a good season

EDIT: :D T-W-A-T is a bad word :D

Redmond's a tidy player, but he really needs to improve his leg-spin which would further increase his chances of being selected in the ODI side. Haven't seen alot of his bowling, but from the SOO matches, he looks to have a neat action, and good accuracy. Potential second spinner in the 07WC? Definitely.

McIntosh is probably the same size as Matthew Hayden, maybe a little skinnier..but he certainly looks solid at the crease and has a similar method to that of Mark Richardson.

Tim Lythe is 25. He used to play at my club Auckland University, but he moved because Uni have been struggling for a number of years and he thought he would have a better shot at playing for Auckland else-where.
He's taken alot of wickets in club competition and also in the Provincial 'A' tournaments. I think he's got alot of potential..but unless he has a couple of amazing seasons, I doubt he'll make the World Cup.

I want to see Ryder opening the batting for NZ in ODI's. I like his attitude, he likes to dominate the bowlers..actually Ryder & McCullum would be quite a good opening pair if you ask me.

Redmond's batting has come on more than his leg-spin..which is a shame because I think alot of us would prefer it to be the other way around.

He's been consistent for the last 2 seasons now with the bat, but he's still very hit & miss with his bowling and I just can't see him making it to international level unless he really starts to come good with his leg-spin.

The other guy im watching out for is Rob Nicol. He went quiet last season, but he really is a potential middle order batsman for NZ particularly in tests if he puts his game together this season.

His off spin is also very handy, that of Nicol's.I don't think we will see a McCullum/Ryder opening combination for a while yet....

I think thats the opening combination we could be looking to after the World Cup. I read at www.radiosport.co.nz that Ryder said his preferred position in ODI's would be as an opener. And through-out interviews this week McCullum has also stated that he's keen to do it.

I hope Auckland don't try and turn Lythe into a batsman or batting allrounder and bat him at 5 or 6 after this innings....

Why do domestic sides pick 5 bowlers and only 5 batsmen in 4-day games? The ND is a prime example.

State Vice-Captain
Wilson(ave 22) ,Horsley(ave 33) ,Watling(ave 20) , Evans(ave 29) , Flynn(ave 31), Orchard(ave 26), Yovich(ave 26) and McGlashan(ave 20) I would class as batters.

Now nothing Spectacular there. But then alot of these players are very inexperienced and young so still havent really deveolped consistancy yet. They are also missing Marshalls and Vettori in that top middle order so it not easy for players to step n and out. ANd they have just lost there most stable player in Styris

State 12th Man
You in your deluded mind might suggest Orchard, Yovich and McGlashan as batsmen, but I certainly don't. Orchard and Yovich are bowling allrounder, while McGlashan is a keeper batsman who hasn't shown much with the bat. I'm talking about specialist batsmen, and only playing 3 or 4 in a side who's consistently struggled with batting baffles me.

Canterbury should have a good bowling attack if Sherlock is ever fit

Sherlock, Nixon, Harris, Wisemen with possibly another seamer like Cunis or Ellis would look quite good. Also Todd Astle bowls nice leggies
