Here's an interesting rant from Darren Lockyer on the Broncos website.

Main point of interest for me:

"...when I was 23 and rugby union made an approach to me. The money was slightly better than in league but, in the end, the risk just outweighed the reward.

I can tell you what, though, if I was offered what Matt Giteau will get, I would be pulling on a Western Force jumper next season. Anyone who says that is disloyal is kidding themselves..."

Watch the Queensland Reds now come in for Locky with a extremely HIGH offer... Its inevitable...

Yep. Then the Broncos will have no halves at all.

I'm surprised that Lockyer made such a public call, in such an unequivocal manner. Is he fishing for a union contract?

Sad to see Trent go, but good luck to him. It'll be interesting to see how much money it frees up for the Dragons and how hard they'll hit the player market. Also, if Gasnier goes to union the Dragons may be fairly cashed up. It's been a long time since the Dragons made a big name signing, hopefully they can snare one.

There seems to be a lot more interest in the NRL thread this year... last year there were 1,467 posts in the official NRL thread, so far this year we are on 1,100 and we are only 1/3 through the regular season...

Locky is into the 2 year of a 5 year deal, hes a Bronco for life. I dont think he would be suited to Union anyway, he thrives on being given time with the ball and when the defence rushes up on him he can crack, i doubt he'll be able to stand the constant pressure of the defence being in his face...

Maybe that's why he's so sour in interviews - can't help thinking of the money he could be earning ;)

He'd be a perfect fit for Union - he can't tackle.
Not really - he opens holes in the line for backs to run through and score trys, and we all know that's not the objective in union.

yeah he is lifeless in interviews - taken on the personality of his coach
id prefer that than taking on the looks of his coach, Scott Minto take note...

All good and well for him to rally players to go to Wigan next year, but if they get relegated this year they will be playing 2nd Division Football.. Im sure plenty of players will be willing to take that risk..

NOT...
David Peachey is playing NL1 for Widnes.

From what i've heard, apparently all contracts become void if they get relegated.. Not sure if this is right maybe Steds could clear it up... Apparently thats why there is talk of Richards coming back to the Tigers if they get relegated...
Dunno about that one, but it'd make sense. There's a huge financial gap between Superleague and National League 1. Wigan couldn't afford to keep all of Richards, Fletcher, Paleaaesina, Higham, O'Loughlin et al, so it's likely.

So who plays 5/8 for NSW then?

Braith Anasta or a Scott Hill who can't make the Melbourne Storm 17 for two weeks in a row?

Well at least there is one thing Queensland has over NSW is in the halves.

Either way it will be for Queensland

6. Lockyer (c)
7. Thurston

or;

6. Lockyer (c)
7. Prince

Which is a lot better then what NSW will put together.
Anasta and Sutton are probably the favorites, but they are both in pretty bad form so if they don't improve them you might see a makeshift 5/8 like Head, Orford, Gower, Hornby or Wing. In other words we're stuffed.

Gasnier will play 5/8 for NSW if theres no other options and he hasnt signed for Union by then, not sure how he will go at that level though...
