Not really, there are others to fill the gap and at seven McCullum can bat like a nutter, but at five he can't handle the responsibility. At seven his talent might be better served.I think that sums up how the whole of NZ is feeling about McCullum at the moment. It is understandable why Bracewell wanted McCullum to move up to number 5 but the experiment has failed, he needs to admit it and move McCullum back to his rightful 7. For someone so talented it is a big waste.
That seems to be a big issue with NZ batsman atm; responsibility, valuing your wicket.
