The gist of Vettori's comments post-match:

"I'm happy with McCullum at five"

"Elliott was mainly picked as a number seven batsman, his bowling wasn't really considered."

Whatever he's on, I want some. I need an escape from reality.

If that was the case then you would think they would actually select someone who could bat.

Yeah exactly.

He's been bowling "badly" at times but has still been consistently taking wickets. He's very awkward to face and when he gets it in the right area, he's clearly dangerous. He gets a huge amount of wickets with deliveries pitches up just outside off, and and lots more edges behind the wicket that don't take wickets. Just because you don't see a left-armer swinging it in and trapping right-handers in front with unplayable deliveries doesn't mean that they aren't bowling wicket taking balls, and Johnson clearly is.

His contribution has been valuable and right now he deserves his spot in the team, and that's all that matters.
but do you think he would have taken some of those wickets if he bowled like that as a right hander ?

Watto! has been dropped...
Thank you, that makes it easier to bowl Aus out and Siddle wasn't the greatest bowler ever seen, though in saying that I'd prefer they'd dropped Stuart Clark for Siddle, because more bowlers, however good or bad, means more dumb NZ shots and therefore wickets.

Probably a good move actualy when you think about it.

I'd like to think that whoever picked him forgot it was a test and thought it was an ODI (where Elliott is a damn good player imo) but unfortunately I do think they thought Elliott was better than Fulton, Broom, Sinclair, Hay..you get the idea.

*Sigh* Team for Test 2:

Jamie How I rate him highly, but he's in a slump atm, and on the England tour he carried the top 3 and in his slump we're even more exposed. I believe he will come right, and I'm gonna show faith in him.

Aaron Redmond I don't want to, but no openers are scoring domestically and Guptill has managed to injure himself, plus he can have one final chance before we dump him (probably for Papps or Guptill).

Peter Fulton Should have been in this side for yonks now. Quality batsman, has a few technical flaws but unlike Elliott and Marshall, who have been inexplicably selected ahead of him, he has a good FC record and some seriosuly good ability as he showed in ODIs in 2007.

Daniel Flynn I'm not convinced, and in the first stages of his innings in the first dig he looked like a rabbit in the headlights, but he has a brain, has ablity and whilst he didn't deserve selection and deserves to be dropped from ODIs, he's shown promise in his test career.

Ross Taylor He's played his most consistent and his best cricket here. Plus like his mate Ryder he is prone to brain explosions and with our current top order its a recipe for disaster.

Jesse Ryder Classy batsman but extremely dump in his thinking. If we could clone the brain of Fulton or Flynn and give it to him we'd probably have won the previous test. An irresponsible batsman comingi n at three behind to shaky openers is not good.

Brendan McCullum Back to where you belong in tests.

And then the same bowling attack.

Patel, as likeable as he is, isn't effective and the bowling attack is fine as it is, though its very tempting to bring in Mills.

Basically, whilst we have a shaky opening pair, having three irresponsible batsmen at three, four and five means we'll end up five down for zilch fairly often and thats exactly whats happening

Mills isn't injured. He has been sent back to play FC cricket.

Patel coming into the side because the next match is at Adelaide.

What the hell? Why did you move Taylor from his rightful position at 4.

Because he'll do better at 5.

Agree with everything in Flem's team, except I'd swap around where Flynn and Ryder are batting. Flynn should act as a barrier between the middle and lower order. He's done well, but I'd be a bit nervous about him facing the newer ball.

for Adelaide imo. Doubt it will happen that way. They have brought Patel into the squad for Adelaide, so I assume he has a chance to play. Would replace him with Martin personally, but I can see him being brought in for O'Brien.

Still, one 'spinner' should be enough.

I think Ryder-Taylor-Flynn is good. I don't want to see Flynn move to far up the order at the moment. Both Ryder and Taylor should benefit from moving down a spot.

Nevertheless, McCullum will probably still bat at 5. :(

Another summer of ups and downs of Black Caps' woes...

I doubt Vets would change anything in this team setup, he said in the interview he's happy with McCullum at 5, and McCullum wants to bat at 5, being VC he's got a right to dictate where he wants to play.

I still rate Flynn, and with his left hand batting he's perfect to be in first drop (no 3) since How is the permanent opener (RHB) who's likely to do well. He's a natural 3 because he has sound technique, except he had issues with the odd good nut. PLUS, it'll actually be nice to see him get more aggressive for a change, rather than having to come EVERY innings thus far feeling like he has to hold back every single shot (hence that headless rabbit comment from Flem). He is an attacking batsman, but every time he's in, he's forced to save face for the inept batsmen above him.

Southee - Somebody please tell him to just be a slog merchant WHENEVER he's in to bat, regardless. If he comes off great, if he doesn't so be it. Accumulation of runs cannot come from the lower order, it comes from the top.

Mills is sent home because of his poor form with the ball.

BARNES OUT
All we are saying, is give Bollinger a chance...
He (arguably) should've played in Brisbane but there's no way he should play in Adelaide. Krejza should and will play, he'll probably get pasted but he deserves the shot on one of the flatter and rougher wickets in Aus.

Still tip him to get McCullum out whilst he is trying to smash him out of the park.
