Andrew Symonds was left out of the Australian side against Bangladesh at the 11th hour because of a breach of team rules. The initial reason given by Ricky Ponting at the toss was that Symonds had flu.
Senior Australian team officials will conduct an investigation into the matter at the close of play and it will be decided at that juncture whether to take any further action. Symonds, 30, was named in the initial side for the Australian's opening fixture of the NatWest Series but was then withdrawn because of what was described as "a niggle". It was then suggested that he had flu, and it was only towards the end of Australia's innings that confirmation came of his alleged misdemeanour - details of which have not been given.
"Symonds was not selected to play for Australia against Bangladesh today after it was discovered that he had breached team rules," said a spokesman for the Australian team. "A full investigation will be conducted this evening by senior team management and any further action will be determined at that point.
"We will advise the outcome of that investigation as soon as possible but, once that information has been released, there will be no further comment from the team. The initial information we gave to you was provided by the head coach [John Buchanan] after the matter was brought to light late in the warm-up so that the game could get underway with the minimum of distraction whilst the situation was clarified.''&
