it's entirely bracewell's fault he hasn't reverted to his strengths since being dropped, it just annoys me seeing a decent bowler go the franklin route

southee was a lesser bowler than bracewell when bracewell entered the team, but naturally his place is sacred in all formats which is why he'll play every nz game at the world cup
Franklin was due to injuries tbf.

The more I think about it, the more Hobart was a fluke in my mind. It was just the perfect storm for Bracewell's bowling at that moment, green wicket with slightly invariable bounce & near-perfect swinging conditions.

He's never gone close to repeating it if we're honest.

I think we all know what Bracewell offers with the ball - something unexciting and akin to a 130km/h bowling machine, and not even all that accurate. A touch of shape today but generally expect good players to smash him everywhere, especially when it's roady.

I know we shouldn't automatically write people off - so what would he have to do to be in the side? If he's an allrounder then CDG is his primary competition (Neesham more a batsman) and Bracewell's bowling probably does exceed CDG's slightly in ODIs. But I have a hard time seeing his lower order batting exceeding CDG's and unless he can prove the opposite, there's no point.

Southee was also definitely superior in every way from 2012-2014.

Same, but I'd still probably advise the next generation's "third best opening bowler who scored lots of runs in junior cricket" to do the same. It's easy for us fans to appreciate someone who's going to come in once in a blue moon and be a good replacement but I find it hard to criticise Bracewell or the team management for trying to find a talented player a different role that could actually translate to the Test first XI. Southee turning into a complete joker in ODIs has changed things a bit but I don't think it was particularly foreseeable.

I think Bracewell has a bit of a mental block when it comes to batting at international level as well, which doesn't help his case. You could find a place for him a lot easier if he was a legit 20-25 average batsman. At this point though, I see no reason why he's ahead of someone like Kuggs.

absolutely, but it still annoys me watching him consciously bowl in a way that makes him less good

Jeez, run a ball off Sodhi looks depressingly easy for India. Perhaps needs to slow it down a bit, like the Indian spinners do.

Bracewell was outstanding for NZ during that 11-12 summer season, he bowled just as well against South Africa too.

He was a genuine prospect when he first broke into the team, outswing at 140k is no joke. That ACL rupture a couple of years ago probably didn't help him pace tbh. Career ender in most sports that.

Good mates with the likes of Williamson, Southee, Boult etc

When did he bowl even remotely like he did in Hobart against SA? I do NOT recall that.

Well he didn't take 6-40 if thats what you're getting at but you can still bowl well and not get wickets. He was miles ahead of any New Zealand bowler in that series.
