i was thinking of our tour to sa where he was the best bowler. marto was awful, boult was bad and i can't even remember if southee and taylor toured

Pretty sure this series made Gillespie ridiculously h4x in that NZ CPL we ran. He simming average was literally 11 I think, it was stupid.

You all said CdG being good enough to open the bowling was unrealistic back then though, look who's talking now. ;)
It’s unrealistic now, I think CDG is the new black magic.

You can't have seen that series if you didn't see Gillespie was a class above our other bowlers in every respect.

On Bracewell, you kind of proved my earlier point that Hobart was a bit of a fluke (perfect storm) if you're suggesting 9 wickets in 3 tests @ 38 was bowling as well as he did in picking up the 6-40 (and 10-fer).
The most bizarre thing about it all was Gillespie never played another test!

Oh wait, Santner isn't playing today... just realised. Sodhi isn't even in the same ball-park in ODIs.

Haha funnily enough I thought his post was ekh for kind of the same but also kind of the opposite reason.

Not doing well against SA is fine because no Kiwis do anyway. It's basically irrelevant because it's almost an automatic loss, and replacing a meh Southee with a dire anyone else would not improve matters. Australia are kind of ripe for the picking though.
I'll admit my argument is pretty poorly constructed, I'm just not that convinced by his recent good test stats as an indication of his medium to long term performance.

He also averaged 30 odd in 2017 and 2016, only 2015 was an especially poor season. Southee has been doing the job alright at Tests for a while. ODIs and T20? Yeah...

Pakistan are playing some good ODI cricket now and the Windies have some very exciting batting talent. I'm starting to worry we won't make the CWC semis

Yeah I don't really agree, but your argument is perfectly fine if you think he's going to perform worse than the alternatives in more marginal cases where the difference between Southee and the next guy could make a big difference (Pakistan, England and Australia home and away, Sri Lanka away, India home etc).

nah the one around the 2011-12 era. unless martin retired much later than i think he did it has to be around then. graeme smith was still playing.
I think his debut, he ended up taking 5 for 100 odd or something while everyone else barely took a wicket. However, his approach was fairly similar to Neil Wagner iirc; lots of shortish stuff and getting batsmen caught in the outfield. Was hardly dominating stuff. From memory Fleming and Vettori didn't rate him.

Thing is I can't even be entertained by the class of the Indian batsmen here. I'm just kind of bored. Their excellence is to be expected because they're not being challenged. Yawn.
