Hopefully the Indians will carry on from this and win an away series soon. They have shown that they are capable, they are bridging the gap between potential and performance, now they should start getting the results.
It'll be an interesting test for them. They've performed so well, pushing the Aussies on their home turf (it's certainly been a moral victory for India, at least), but as it stands, they don't look likely (at this stage) to add to their poor record of series wins away over the last 20 years or so.

They also seem to play out of their skins against Australia - they need to be able to beat sides like New Zealand at home, and at least get series wins against sides like Zimbabwe and the West Indies away from home, if they want to be in contention for top spot.

The Aussies will be scratching their heads as to how they're going to beat this Indian team in India though. And they'll struggle against Sri Lanka away - there's no doubt that the gap between Australia and the rest will have closed up substantially over the coming months.

Here come the Aussies. 10 an over for 15 overs. Just maybe. At least I hope Steve Waugh gets a ton and stays not out. :D

Steve Waugh is out and what a sign of respect from the crowd, Australian team and Indian team. That is what the game of cricket is all about.

I'd have loved to see him get the hundred. I'm not totally sure what was in his head - either he wanted to get the ton really quickly so he wouldn't get criticized for playing in his own self-interest (a ridiculous claim, but some people will have made it), or whether he actually thought there was a chance for the Aussies to win from there (I really don't think there was). And par form, Gilchrist went out almost immediately, and the tail was exposed.

But a great innings - it felt like a last-innings century was there for the taking if he hadn't pushed so hard.

I think on the behalf of CricketWeb, thanks Steve Wagh for a great career. Australia's chief blocker is out there Jason Gillespie.

That's probably the weirdest stumping I've ever witnessed. Oh well it's fitting that Gilly and Katich are the last there, they're the ones that prevented an Indian win in my opinion.

Great Series, Great forum.

Feel priviliged to be born in the steve waugh era.

Great to see India retain the Border Gavaskar trophy (which was least expected of them).

For me it is one of the greatest series India has ever played in.

Cant wait for Australia's tour of India.

People can talk about India's failure to win in Australia, but they put up a fight which NO ONE expected. It was a great series and as an Indian fan living in Australia, it's great to finally see a good fighting series in Australia rather than a one sided affair like the English tour here last year.

Great to see Sachin get Man of the Match, absolutely fantastic to see Rahul Dravid get Player of the Series, even though Ponting was great with two double centuries, it was Rahul Dravid who was as consistent as ever, and it really shows what a class player he is.

A great series, India keep the trophy, Steve Waugh gets the respect he deserves and everyone witnesses a great series full of pure competition and awesome cricket. I'm glad to have watched it all.

Well done, India. Just about every pundit's (and most experts) prediction was a 4-0 drubbing.

They didn't quite slay the dragon, but they surprised a lot of people. It's really hard to see the Aussies beat them on their own grounds on the return tour, but I guess you never know.

Hard to believe Waugh's career is over. I'm so glad he held India out though, he did great.

The series cost me a few nights without sleep, but I don't regret one minute of zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Personally, I would have given the MoM award to Anil Kumble for a quite magnificent performance of perseverance, but I have no real argument with Sachin picking it up.

A wonderful series of splendid batting, perhaps a little too one-sided in favour of the bat to be an all-time classic but one which was well worth watching from start to finish.

Craig's series player ratings

Australia
(Marks out of ten)
JL Langer - 7/10 - Some inconsistantcy. Made two centuries, but made some low scores and became Ajit Argark's main victim dismissing him 5 times in this series
ML Hayden - 7/10 - Not his usual self in regular series of late. Made one century, a 99 and a unbeaten 50 were his main contributions.
RT Ponting - 9.5/10 - Two big double centuries, made a pair of 50's at Brisbane andm ade a solid 40 in Sydney.
DR Martyn - 6/10 - Solid. Nothing brilliant nor horrible. Involved in a horrible run out in Brisbane with Steve Waugh. Probably would have made a ton up there if Waugh didnt declare.
SR Waugh - 7/10 - In his farewell series, he was nothing brilliant nor poor. Made some solid contributions in Brisbane and Sydney. Picked up the important wicket of Rahul Dravid at the MCG.
SM Katich - 8.5/10 - Really came on in this series as a Test batsman. Very consistant in the final three Tests of this series and had his moments with the ball and in catching. The two important dropped catches costed him a extra half a mark.
AC Gilchrist - 5/10 - Didnt really life up to expectations and had a poor summer by his standards. Solid behind the stumps.
B Lee - 4.5/10 - Really struggled in his two Tests when he cameback from injury and was down on pace with the ball. Conceded over 200 runs in the 1st innings of the Sydney Test. Bowled far too many no-balls.
JN Gillespie - 9/10 - The pick of the Australian bowlers throughout the series and bowled well on occassions without luck. Missed the Melbourne Test prevented from getting extra points.
NW Bracken - 4/10 - Didnt really bowl well. Bowled well on occassions at Melbourne, but didnt really look threatening in Sydney. Didnt look up to Test standard.
SCG MacGill - 5/10 -Bowled well on occassions but the Indians did play him very well throughout the series.
AJ Bichel - 6.5/10 - Didnt really do a lot wrong before being left out of the final two Test matches. Bowled very well at Adelaide.
BA Williams - 6.5/10 - Same as above for Williams.

Marks maybe generous or harsh, if so say so!

Indians coming next.

Good cricket all around, its not just the comments by members of this forum, have a look at what Ricky Ponting said before start of series.

Collateral Damage
Over to the battle between our bowlers and their out-of-form top batsmen

RICKY PONTING

There are no surprises at Brisbane as far as the Gabba wicket is concerned. There is a fair bit of grass on it, and by the looks of it, there will be plenty of bounce and pace on the first day. Gabba is fast bowling territory, and it is unfortunate that Brett and Glenn are not in the side to inflict maximum damage on the visiting team. Having said that, both Bracken and Williams have not put a step wrong since we landed in India, and I don't think we are short of firepower, because Jason Gillespie has been a great contributor to the side over the last couple of years, and he is back in the squad fully fit.

Ganguly's dislike for chin music is common knowledge. Is it an admission to some faults in his technique?

Most spectators at an India-Australia game look forward to the battle between our bowlers and the Indian batsmen. At the start of the Test, it looks like some of the Indians like Virender Sehwag and Saurav Ganguly have not yet hit top form. Warm-up

games are not much to go by as far as results are concerned, but every player likes to have one good outing under his belt before he gets ready for the big games.

It must also be said that of late battles between Indian bowlers and Australian batsmen have also gained some popularity. While the Turbanator and Co had us in a spin a couple of years ago, we have exorcised those ghosts completely, particularly in the one-day games the two sides have played in the last year, to beat India pretty consistently. As a batsman, I would like to ensure that the success I have enjoyed against the Indians in the shorter version of the game is now replicated in Tests as well. Others like Steve Waugh, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist also have tremendous batting records against the Indians, so you can bet that this half of the battle will also be pretty absorbing.

Other preparations were also under way before the first Test, this time through the media. Blokes like Justin Langer and Shane Warne have already started mentioning some chinks in the Indian armour. Langer has gone public with his hope that Zaheer Khan opens the series with a repeat of his nightmarish first over at the Wanderers World Cup finals, while Shane Warne has recommended some "chin music" from the fast bowlers for Saurav Ganguly whenever the Indian captain comes in to bat. It's the start of the home series and some of the guys do go over the top, but there are germs of truth in their statements. Zaheer has been struggling against Australia over the last six-seven months, albeit in one-day internationals. Test cricket is a different challenge and how Zaheer copes with the problems he has been having against us will give us an insight into his mental strength.

As far as Ganguly is concerned, his dislike for "chin music"—Australian for the short-pitched stuff—is common knowledge. In a way, he himself acknowledged his discomfort on bouncy pitches by flying down to Australia and taking a crash course on playing Down Under from Australian batting great Greg Chappell. That trip could be viewed either as a player's dedication to the pursuit of ironing out deficiencies in his game or as a player's admission to certain shortcomings in his technique. As the opposition, we will obviously take the latter option. We will definitely test the Indian captain with some short-pitched stuff, but then, I'm sure he has come to expect that from us by now.

Ganguly has been sensible in that he has kept his interaction with the press to a minimum. Some negative press as well as the fact that he has not really done well in the warm-ups must put pressure on him, and he has enough on his plate right now to avoid unnecessary run-ins with the fourth estate.

Atlast it's over. Eventhough it's a draw, I'd say it's a virtual Indian victory considering the predictions and prejudice of the series. Moreover, the last game was fully in Indian control( with some resistance from Katich , Gillespie and Steve the great.)

And to add to that Matthew Hayden before the start of series said that VVS Laxman was SCARED of Fast and Short balling and wont stand a chance

Nevertheless, Australia really showed that they are upto the challange and a 1-1 draw was inevitable it just twitched me a little with the way they commented on Indian players.

PS: All of them issued some clarifications after Adelaide.

well Waugh and Katich both batted really well, never looked in any real trouble. Kumble saved India though, alot of overs and kept it tight.

1 real complaint though, man of the series - Dravid???

Dravid - 490 runs @ 122 - SR 48

Ponting 634 @ 126 - SR 60

coming into this match, dravid added 129 and ponting 72, ponting got 2 doubles as well.

i would have given a jint MoM award to Kumble and Tendulkar, without Kumble India would not have stood a chance.

good thinking by patel to to drop the ball onto the stumps, had he taken it cleanly and taken the bails off Gilchrist probably would have got home:D

Ponting - 706 @ 100.85

Dravid - 619 @ 123.8

Seems fair enough for me and he was the one who played a major role in Adelaide win.

Likewise, Ponting played the major role in Aus's Melbourne win. It seems strange to me that the administrators (or whoever) are loath to give a joint Man of Series award, especially when both players have done so well and the series is drawn. Same goes for MotM award (Sachin and Kumble).

man of the match and man of the series should have gone to anil kumble imho.... it's not very often some1 takes 12 wickets in a test match....

not sure bout stats.....but i think without kumble, india would've strugggled to get aus out...and i think in this series that was more important than runs
