A couple of big name moves in the domestic game today...

Stephen Fleming signed for and will captain Nottinghamshire during the 2005 season.

And Kent signed Middlesex's all-rounder Simon Cook, from his stats last year he looks a pretty decent signing however if rumors are true in that the deal could be a swap for Star batsman Ed Smith then I will be deeply unhappy at the Kent board, as I know who I would want walking out for me each game!

Kent County Cricket Club today announced that Simon Cook has agreed to join the county on a two year contract. Cook was Middlesex’s top wicket taker in the County Championship this year and had an outstanding record in the Totesport League. Cook, 27, is a right-arm, fast medium bowler and right hand bat.

Commenting, Graham Johnson, Chairman of Cricket said:
“We are delighted that Simon has agreed to join Kent. His all-round ability will strengthen our squad in all forms of cricket and we are looking forward to him making a significant contribution to the future of Kent cricket.”

Simon Cook said:
“I would like to thank Middlesex for their support over the last 8 years. I feel that it is time to make a positive move for my career. Kent is a club with big ambitions and I look forward to helping them fulfil their goals and aspirations.”

Vinny Codrington, Middlesex Chief Executive said "We fully accept Simon's wish to pursue his career by facing a new challenge with a different county. We were extremely reluctant to see him go. He has had an outstanding season for us, breaking both the national and club record for one day wickets in the totesport league, and being our top wicket taker in the county championship".

"He has been with the club since 1997, and it is always sad to lose a player who has developed with the club. However, we respect his reasons for wanting to move on, and, as hard as we tried to keep him, he wanted a fresh and new challenge. We wish him well".

In 2004, Cook played in 11 Frizzell County Championship matches and averaged 17.35 with the bat, and took 34 wickets at 29.64 - with a seasons best of 6-89.

However it was in the totesport League that Simon Cook excelled and his signing indicates Kent's determination to bounce back to the first division at the first attempt.

Whilst averaging a modest 12.40 with the bat, Cook captured a staggering 39 wickets at an average of just 15.35, and twice took 5 wickets in a match with a season best of 6-37.
