***Official*** England in Pakistan

Bycott has an excellent point there. None of Kamran Akmal, Younis Khan and Butt (yes Butt, even though he batted pretty nicely, he failed to rotate the strike as much as he should have) thought about taking singles to relieve the pressure put on them by the english bowlers. On this pitch, Harmisson should never have been allowed to have figures like 10-5-13-0 in the first place. This was also very evident in the last session, when Akmal played like three overs straight, taking a single from the last ball and either blocking or finding the fielders for the rest of the over.

That's the only score he's ever made. He's no better than Harmison. He's a number 10 batsman two places too high.
Actually watch him - he's a lot better than Harmison, particularly defending.

pakistan arent totally out in this test, i rekon if they manage to make at least 300+ it wud be o.k
Umm... England hasn't even batted yet. Of course Pakistan isn't out of it!

People are making too much of a deal of all this. It's just one day of cricket, and England still need 4 wickets...

Giles has played exactly 2 tests in India and hardly set the world alight in those.
probably not, but he did enough to suggest that hes a pretty good bowler in those conditions, something warne didnt do whatsoever.

I could launch into some meaningless dialogue about how he took wickets by bowling 1 - 2 feet outside leg-stump because he had run out of ideas. But what's the point?
and what is wrong with that? whether he bowled 2 feet outside the leg stump or not, the fact is that he did a fairly decent job using that plan, something that warne obviously didnt do. and its not like warne is never guilty of bowling 2 feet outside the leg stump either.

Anyway, I'll leave you with this: Michael Clarke has a better record than Ash in India :p
and as said earlier, none of the wickets on which giles bowled on in india were remotely as spinner friendly as the sole innings on which clarke bowled on.

To be fair, Harmison, Jones and Hoggard are all pretty capable with the bat shown against their gutsy batting in the Ashes. Neither can be described as a "walking wicket".

Jones has got to be one of the better no 11s in the world.
Jones is THE best number 11 in the world. He really shouldn't be batting at number 11. He played some wonderful orthodox shots during the Ashes.

How about anyone

Eng fans only response is ... "we dont have anyone better."

How would you know? Youve didnt try anyone despite Giles' under-performance.
so obviously you slept through the times that croft, dawson, and batty played then....

The response has always been there's no alternative. Well, on today's display, Udal was Ok and probably worth a try before now.
except for the fact that hes older, a worse batsman and at his best 'only as good' as giles. the point of having him in the side would be so that you could call for his axing for 2 years and then claim that anyone in england(including ashley) could do as good a job?

Depending on exactly which team NZ decide to pick, Bond would clearly be a better number 11 than Jones. (Cumming, Marshall, Marshall, Fleming, Astle, Vincent, Oram, McCullum, Vettori, Franklin, Bond).

They could pick Martin instead of Vincent though, which would change things, but theres every chance they could go with that lineup.

especially considering that england will be batting last on this deck.

You're kidding me...

Bond has a first class hundred.

I dont think ive seen someone that bad with the bat since Tufnell. I mean even proper tailenders at least learn to hold the bat out and block straight balls, not Shabbir it seems 8-)
