That's not the point. I don't think anyone would suggest that Udal didn't outbowl Giles today, but then Giles didn't bowl well. It was Social who said that Udal had demonstrated that he could do a better job than averaging nearly 40.
I think he could. Sometimes you do not get the rewards you deserve and Udal has not yet had the chance to get stuck in to the tail.

And nor will he. And nor, usually, does Giles.

No, the response is always "there's no-one else."

Why else would anyone defend persevering with someone who averages nearly 40. That's not doing the job asked of him, that's not being good enough to achieve anything better.

Well Udal showed today that he's capable, on this showing at least, of doing at least the same job.
We have tried other bowlers Salisbury, Dawson, Batty and guess what they were worse than Giles. If we had picked Udal for the Ashes he would have got smashed, contributed less with the bat & you would have been on here saying whats the point of picking a 36 year old who is averaging over 40 with ball & not contributing with the bat.

I don't know why this is difficult to comprehend but Giles although not great he is the best player we have in Englnad for his role in the team. This is obvious to selectors aswell as all the England fans on this board.

A pleasing first-day comeback from England, some good bowling restricting the scoring-rate and a welcome first wicket for Udal (however unusual it may have been). If we can roll them over for less than 300 (possible given that Pakistan are bunnies from 8 downwards), then we're laughing on a pitch like this.

Excellent start but a very poor end its so funny that pakistan was worried about the top order and now its the middle order thats disapointed. Raza pack your bags your 9 year international career is gonna finish after this match still cant believe they picked him over Afridi.

All I got from today's play is that Inzy is awesome. He doesn't seem to give a sh*t about what's going on, but he plays so well.

And I had never heard of Udal before today.....

Great effort by England. They were patient and it paid off.

I know Raza did well in the practice match, but Asim Kamal should be in that team IMO. I don't understand how they keep leaving him out.

Typical attitude.

We'll stick with an ordinary player rather than take the risk that his replacement is worse.

Well, Udal was tried today and he looked better.

And stop it with the crap about Giles performing his role. What's his role? Dont take wickets, be economical because we'll give you 4-5 men on the fence, average teens with the bat, and be slow in the field.

Wish they had that job when I was playing. Id have chalked up a 100 tests.

For goodness sake, knock it on the head. This is becoming tedious in the extreme. I suggest you start a 'Giles, love him or hate him?' thread so that we can keep the nonsense in one place.

You've made your point, others have countered and it's obvious that you are neither going to win or lose, except in your own mind.

Unfortunately no-one is agreeing to disagree on this occasion.

England once again prooved why they are worlds next no.1 team, on flat wicket we saw some very good bowling by english pace bowlers, inspite of very good opening stand english bowlers never gave up and got good results and they r on top of their game.

A very good day for England.

Great bowling from all the seamers in tough conditions, they stuck to they're task really well,i thought the yorker from Flintoff in a crucial part of the day sums up England

'we might have one bad session, but we're going to win the other 2'

Udals bowling was great too,he was unlucky not to get more wickets.

Dissapointed with Pakistan's performance. They started off so well but all credit to Eng Bowlers.
