I'd also like to point out that Marcus Trescothick became my 100th ODI wicket in the course of this match. :)

Another top effort from the team - I said earlier that there was no team we had any reason to fear, and I stick to that! Go CWLAND!

The eyes of CWLand should be on the upcoming Pakistan vs India match, as the loser of that match will face the CW XI in its opening fixture of the second round.

Great effort to score such a big win over the hosts, Goffy and Camps batted very well in hard conditions and all the bowlers stuck to the pre match plan.

Well done Neil on your 100th :thumbs_up

GROUP A:
Boucher shows the way
South Africa vs New Zealand
at Trent Bridge

A mature unbeaten innings from Mark Boucher was the key, as South Africa topped group A, whilst eliminating one of the tournament favourites - New Zealand. The Black Caps bowed out of the Champions Trophy, as South Africa chased 245 for victory with 3 wickets in hand.

Stephen Fleming and Craig McMillan hit half-centuries to get New Zealand off to a good start at 155/3, but Makhaya Ntini returned to compensate for an expensive early spell, taking a total of 4 wickets and assisting in limiting the Kiwis to 244/9.

Chasing the modest target, South Africa slipped to a bit of bother at 136/4, but the solid batting of Ashwell Prince complemented the style of Boucher beautifully, as the two put on 65 runs for the 5th wicket.

Prince's dismissal was quickly followed by that of Kemp, Shaun Pollock and Nicky Boje managed to hang around with Boucher long enough to see their team home.

Conditions: Overcast; a bit of seam movement; good pace and bounce for batting
Toss: South Africa

New Zealand 244/9 (50 overs)
South Africa 245/7 (47.4 overs)

South Africa won by 3 wickets.
South Africa (4 points) New Zealand (1 point)

Man of the Match: MV Boucher

GROUP D:
Pakistan fade in the shadow of Sehwag
England vs Cricket Web XI
at Edgbaston

Batting at number 3, Virender Sehwag stroked a magnificent century for his country, as India reached a winning total at Edgbaston against rivals Pakistan. Ganguly, Tendulkar and Dravid were all out to leave the score at 80/3, but Sehwag sought support from the in-form Yuvraj Singh, and the two batted beautifully for a partnership of 152.

Shoaib Akhtar dismissed both batsmen in quick succession, but India closed their innings on 251/5.

Facing a reasonable task, Pakistan started resolutely, but when lost their way in the middle overs, collapsing from 91/2 to 119/6, before being bowled out for 167. No batsman truly looked in form, and Kamran Akmal was the only man to pass 30.

For India, the bowlers shared with wickets around nicely, with even Ganguly taking a wicket as the fifth option.

Conditions: Overcast; some seam movement; decent for batting
Toss: Pakistan

India 251/5 (50 overs)
Pakistan 167 ao (40.1 overs)

India won by 84 runs.
India (5 points) Pakistan (0 points)

Man of the Match: V Sehwag

GROUP 1:
Aussies falter as South Africa slip home
South Africa vs Australia
at the Rose Bowl

Beaten for the second consecutive time, Australia were made to worry about their future in the Champions Trophy, as the struggling powerhouse now faces elimination. South Africa, led by a partnership of 101 for the fourth wicket, and a deep batting lienup, squeezed across the line by 3 wickets.

Makhaya Ntini and Nicky Boje shared 5 wickets, and Australia collapsed for just 169 after electing to take first strike on a good pitch. Only 3 boundaries were hit in the innings, expressing the level of dominance by the South African bowlers.

Australia hit back quickly, however, restricting South Africa to 20/3. It was then that Herschelle Gibbs scored his first runs of the tournament, having recorded 1 and 0 in his previous innings. He and Ashwell Prince (52) carried the score to a more reasonable 120, but were both dismissed in quick time of each other.

Justin Kemp's 21 was huge, but ultimately it was the contribution of Pollock and Boje, with 15 and 9 respectively, which saw the South Africans home.

Conditions: Overcast; wet; no significant seam movement; good pace and bounce for batting
Toss: Australia

Australia 169 (41 overs)
South Africa 173/7 (39.5 overs)

South Africa won by 3 wickets.
South Africa (4 points) Australia (1 point)

Man of the Match: MV Boucher

GROUP 2:
Gough rallies England
England vs India
at Chelmsford

Bolstered by the addition of Darren Gough, England staged a dominant 8-wicket win over India. Gough was brought into the team for disappointing Plunkett, and did not enter the attack until the second change. He proceeded to bowl with accuracy and heart, though, and ended with 4 wickets to his name, as India reached 216/9.

Proving that application was all that was required on the pitch, Trescothick and Strauss batted cautiously through the initial overs, before their strokeply bloomed en route to a partnership of 67. Strauss was out to a stunning catch at backward point but his replacement, Vaughan, looked entirely comfortable too.

Only Tendulkar would take another wicket in the innings, and Vaughan batted superbly for an unbeaten 79 off just 69 balls, whilst his partner Pietersen was calmer in scoring 29 off 34.

Conditions: Overcast; damp; very little seam movement; decent for batting
Toss: England

India 216/9 (50 overs)
England 218/2 (38.2 overs)

England won by 8 wickets.
England (5 points) India (0 points)

Man of the Match: D Gough

GROUP 1:
Shoaib shines, as Webheads wilt
Cricket Web XI vs Pakistan
at Sophia Gardens

A superb early burst from pacer Shoaib Akhtar set the tone, as the Cricket Web XI faltered in chasing a moderate total of 232 for victory. Akhtar took 4 wickets, and despite a fine innings from Chris Butler, it was enough to seal a Pakistani victory by 17 runs.

Brendon Goff won the toss and elected to bowl first, and Nathan Hoy bowled a magnificent second spell to help limit Pakistan to 231/7. The pacer took 4/19 from his last 6 overs, and Pakistan collapsed from a strong position of 190/3 to their eventual score.

The Webheads' top order found batting difficult at the outset, and Camps, Goff, Towns and Markus were back in the pavilion at 41/4. Butler started slowly and he and Robbins added a solid 52 for the fifth wicket. As he settled in at the crease, the left handed Butler began to grow in confidence, accelerating from 37 off 71 balls at one stage to his eventual 71 off 90 balls.

Desperation set in as the equation began to demand in excess of 10 runs per over, and the loss of early wickets told severely in the end. There simply was not enough steam left in the chase, as the Webheads entered the final over needing 24 runs for victory with just one wicket in hand. Kyle Wright was brave in smashing Rana Naved for a six, but was dismissed immediately after to finalize the result.

Conditions: Overcast; a bit of seam movement; decent for batting
Toss: Cricket Web XI

Pakistan 231/7 (50 overs)
Cricket Web XI 214 ao (49.3 overs)

Pakistan won by 17 runs.
Pakistan (4 points) Cricket Web XI (1 point)

Man of the Match: Shoaib Akhtar

GROUP 2:
Sri Lanka crush Windies behind Sangakkara ton
Sri Lanka vs West Indies
at New Road

Kumar Sangakkara was in vintage form, as the West Indies were powerless to defend against defeat by 8 wickets at New Road. Batting through the innings, Sangakkara's 128 came off just 122 balls, and allowed Sri Lanka to reach the target of 233 with more than 7 overs to spare.

Earlier, it was Muttiah Muralitharan that did the damage. Snaring 5 wickets, the champion offspinner inspired a dramatic collapse from 162/2 to 232 all out, as the good work of Gayle at the top of the order went to waste.

Conditions: Overcast; no significant seam movement; good pace and bounce for batting
Toss: Sri Lanka

West Indies 232 (49.3 overs)
Sri Lanka 233/2 (42.4 overs)

Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets.
Sri Lanka (4 points) West Indies (1 point)

Man of the Match: KC Sangakkara
