Murali spins past England
England vs Sri Lanka
at Taunton

Muttiah Muralitharan snared 6 wickets to leave England in tatters at 135 all out, and inspire a comfortable 7-wicket victory for Sri Lanka. England collapsed from 71/1 to the disastrous score, and only Marcus Trescothick was able to advance past 25 in the innings, topscoring with 41.

Though Andrew Flintoff bowled beautifully early on to take 2 wickets, Sri Lanka was never hampered, as Ashley Giles did not pose the same problems as his spin-bowling counterpart.

Sehwag ton holds India steady
India vs West Indies
at Edgbaston

Virender Sehwag struck his second hundred of the tournament, and Irfan Pathan and Ajit Agarkar shared 7 wickets, as India defeated the West Indies by 27 runs. Sehwag's innings was essential to a total of 249/6, as only Rahul Dravid's 70 shone otherwise.

The West Indies lost previous century-makers, Hinds and Sarwan, early in their chase - 30/2. When Gayle was caught at third man for 36, the score was 60/3, and the weight squarely on the shoulders of experienced. Lara battled through in difficult conditions with Chanderpaul, but neither truly got going. Ultimately the required rate was simply too grand to keep up with, and India got home easily.

Kearsley in for Aussie challenge
Young middle order batsman, David Kearsley has been drafted into the Cricket Web XI lineup for the upcoming match against Australia. In a must-win game for both teams, the Cricket Web selectors have opted to go for the inexperienced batsman ahead of the struggling Daniel Towns.

Kearsley is yet to establish himself in One Day International cricket, with a lowly average of 9 over the course of 6 innings. However, healthy contributions at domestic level earmark him as a player for the future.

The man he displaces - Towns - averages a more successful 25.87 in ODI cricket, but has scored just 28 runs in 4 innings during the Champions Trophy.

Cricket Web XI Squad v Australia:

I Markus
LA Camps
BJ Goff (C)
CR Butler
DA Kearsley
MJ Robbins
AP Chaulk (wk)
NS Hoy
DJ Watt
KS Wright
NS Pickup

12th Man: DP Towns

Ponting backs team
Ricky Ponting has stated that he is confident in taking on the Cricket Web XI in the crucial must-win fixture tomorrow. The team beat Pakistan its last time out, ending a streak of 2 consecutive defeats and keeping Australia alive in the tournament.

The only change to the victorious team is the addition of Simon Katich, as Stuart Clark makes way for the additional batsman. Katich adds another spin option to the team, but the move leaves Symonds and Watson as the lone seam support for McGrath and Lee.

"These guys are fighters. We haven't played our best cricket in this tournament, but the confidence is still high and we know that we're better than any team on our day. We just have to prove it now," said the Australian captain.

Australia squad to play CW XI:

AC Gilchrist (wk)
SM Katich
RT Ponting (C)
DR Martyn
MJ Clarke
A Symonds
MEK Hussey
SR Watson
GB Hogg
B Lee
GD McGrath

12th Man: SR Clark

Webheads chase down Australia for crucial win
Cricket Web XI vs Australia
at Trent Bridge

An ecstatic David Kearsley had the privilege of hitting the winning runs, as the Cricket Web XI chased superbly to eliminate Australia from the Champions Trophy and advance to the semi-final. Australia set a challenging target of 271, but the Webheads paced their innings brilliantly, and achieved the total with 3 overs to spare.

Goff won the toss and elected to field in conditions that boasted to assist the seamers. He was met with a positive start from the Aussies, however, as they reached 48/0 after 10 overs, before Watt impacted. The Red seamer claimed 3 wickets in 3 overs, and quickly set Australia back to 66/3 midway through the 15th over.

Michael Clarke took his place at the crease, and looked totally at ease in dominating a partnership of 71 with his captain. Camps bowled Ponting through the gate for a struggling 29, then Symonds joined Clarke for the best partnership of the innings. The two batsmen added a quick 119 runs, and Symonds looked to be dominating with a four and a six off Wright. He then swung over the top of a full delivery and was bowled comprehensively for 56.

The crucial dismissal came in the 48th over and was telling enough that only 14 runs came off the final 13 balls - 270/6.

Facing up to Lee and McGrath in much-improved batting conditions, Markus and Camps started confidently. The pair worked the ball around clinically, dispatching the fractionally loose balls to the boundary. By the end of the 15th over, the score read 92/0. The parnership cruised along and stood at 171 as Camps (88) cut Hogg to Symonds at point. Markus found a worthy partner in Goff, who wasted no time in gaining momentum. A further 60 runs were added and Cricket Web looked to be cruising home.

Two Clarke wickets and a run out stirred things up a bit, but when Marc Robbins smashed the first ball he saw from McGrath for six, it was clear that there would be one result for the taking. Kearsley executed the finale perfectly, dispatching Lee for two boundaries to seal an historic win.

Conditions: Heavily overcast; wet outfield; lots of seam movement
Toss: Cricket Web XI

Australia 270/6 (50 overs)
Cricket Web XI 272/4 (47 overs)

Cricket Web XI won by 6 wickets.

Tendulkar finds form as India win
India vs Sri Lanka
at Lord's

Sachin Tendulkar finally found his stride, and blazed a superb hundred to lead India to a winning total of 305. The Sri Lankans dropped catches at crucial stages of the game, and were made to pay, as the Indian batsmen got in on a decent batting wicket. Muralitharan and Vaas combined to leak 132 runs from 20 overs, despite taking 5 of the 8 Indian wickets to fall.

Sri Lanka started promisingly in the chase. After losing Sangakkara in the first over of the innings, Atapattu and Thuranga played beautifully in taking the score to 156, before the former was brilliantly caught at backward point. The middle order conducted a high tempo of play, but could not accompany the effort by keeping wickets intact, and Sri Lanka's brave attempt came undone to the spin of Virender Sehwag.

Twice the star with the bat in this tournament, Sehwag turned it on with the ball, taking 5 wickets as Sri Lanka fell for 275 all out in the final over of the innings.

Conditions: Overcast; some seam movement; slow pitch
Toss: Sri Lanka

India 305/8 (50 overs)
Sri Lanka 275 ao (49.3 overs)

India won by 30 runs.
India (4 points) Sri Lanka (1 point)

Man of the Match: SR Tendulkar

Hmm, I'd rather see us play Sri Lanka. Tillakaratne Dilshan is a shadow of the man we saw in Bulawayo in '92
