Update:

- Wednesday 30th November: phone went down - Internet access lost
- Thursday 1st December: problem reported to telecom service; response: it will be fixed within 5 days.
- Friday 2nd December: checked to see that report was filed by telecom service; same response.
- Monday 5th December: checked telecom service once more; response: we've known what the problem is since Saturday (3rd December), and it will be fixed by Tuesday 6th December. (for those keeping count, that would have been the 5th day)
- Tuesday 6th December: no action.
- Wednesday 7th December: checked telecom service AGAIN; response: we're understaffed, it will be fixed by Friday (9th) for the latest.
- Thursday 8th December: checked telecom service AGAIN, talked to a manager; response: "I will personally ensure that it is fixed by Friday."
- Friday 9th December: nothing.
- present day: nothing.

My expectations? Nothing.
It sucks that this is the only land line telecom service in the country. Add that to my parents being unwilling to upgrade to hi-speed, and everything is still postponed indefinitely.

"It should be fixed by Wednesday."

New plan:

My dad and I are going into the office again tomorrow to bring some physical presence into this situation. He went today, but we figure they need more pressure.

And the skies cleared... if only for the while...

GROUP B:
Australia vs Zimbabwe
at the Rose Bowl

The Australians were stunned by a defiant Zimbabwean side, as they were limited to 257/7 from a position of 175/2. Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke were the only half-centurions, and Zimbabwe's slower bowlers prospered.

In the chase, the openers marked 8 runs off McGrath's first over, but the score soon read 55/4. Captain Masakadza combined with Coventry, and the two rebuilt the innings steadily, before the former was knocked over by a Hogg delivery that didn't spin. Elton Chigumbura took his place at the crease, and he and Coventry began to accelerate somewhat.

Shane Watson shook things up with 3 wickets in an over, and ultimately the minnows fell 32 runs short.

Conditions: Overcast; wet; a bit of seam about
Toss: Australia

Australia 257/7 (50 overs)
Zimbabwe 225 (49.5 overs)

Australia won by 6 wickets.
Australia (4 points) Zimbabwe (1 point)

Man of the Match: SR Watson

GROUP C:
Webheads unconvincing in CT opener
Cricket Web XI vs Bangladesh
at Headingley

The Cricket Web XI started off their Champions Trophy campaign somewhat less convincingly than they would have hoped to. If not for an inspired spell of bowling from Neil Pickup in the middle overs, the entire game could have been different. Indeed, Bangladesh reached 117/2, before Pickup's 6 wickets spun relief for the Webheads.

Chasing 161 for victory, the early loss of Camps and Markus may have attacked the nerves of some, but Brendon Goff struck his half century at more than a run-a-ball, and Butler made a solid 35. Both were dismissed within 12 runs of each other, and at 108/4, there was still work to be done. Daniel Towns never found truly convincing touch, but he stayed well enough with Marc Robbins, who batted impressively to dominate an unbeaten stand of 53.

Conditions: Overcast; wet; lots for a seamers
Toss: Cricket Web XI

Bangladesh 160 (44.4 overs)
Cricket Web XI 161/4 (34 overs)

Cricket Web XI won by 6 wickets.
Cricket Web XI (5 points) Bangladesh (0 points)

Man of the Match: NS Pickup

Eyes not spreadsheets
I'd say that's an impressive professional effort - scored the runs without problems and bowled well to restrict them.

The opposition who are better at tests than us?
We drew them when we last played them, and last time I check Bangladesh is yet to win a series away from home...

On another note, is 6-35 the second-best ODI spell by a Webhead?

Sort it out Camps... (yes, it does mean I've got 10% of my wickets in 3% of my games, but hey...)

Not sure how 160 all out and a six wicket win with 16 overs to spare is 'unconvincing', though! A good all round effort by the team.

GROUP B:
Vaas demolition eases Lankan blushes
Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe
at Headingley

Sri Lanka stumbled through the first portion of their opening fixture against Zimbabwe, before regaining composure and demolishing the minnows for 51. The margin of victory was an impressive 182 runs, but at 60/5 after being inserted, the Sri Lankans were less than confident.

Early inroads from Rainsford and Ireland put Zimbabwe on top, then Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera stroked calm half-centuries to post a total of 233/6.

Chaminda Vaas ensured that Zimbabwe's chase never got going, taking 2 wickets in his first over, and 4 in total. He and Maharoof quickly limited the score to 5/4, and Muralitharan later took up the simple task of running through the tail.

Conditions: Overcast; lots of seam movement
Toss: Zimbabwe

Sri Lanka 233/6 (50 overs)
Zimbabwe 51 (21.3 overs)

Sri Lanka won by 182 runs.
Sri Lanka (5 points) Zimbabwe (0 points)

Man of the Match: WPUJC Vaas

GROUP C:
England cruise past spirited Bangladesh
England vs Bangladesh
at Lord's

For the second straight match Bangladesh gave a good account of themselves, but they were powerless to prevent England from attaining victory by 7 wickets. Warming up for the anticipated clash with the Cricket Web XI, the hosts comfortably chased a potentially tricky target of 241 for victory.

Shahriar Nafees hit a lovely hundred at the top of the innings for Bangladesh, but the control of Stephen Harmison and Ashley Giles kept the total in check.

In England's turn at the crease, Trescothick and Strauss romped to another century partnership, with the former falling short of a deserved hundred. Michael Vaughan cashed in on some unpenetrative bowling, notching an unbeaten half-century in the chase.

Conditions: Overcast; lots of seam movement
Toss: England

Bangladesh 240/4 (50 overs)
England 244/3 (41.5 overs)

England won by 7 wickets.
England (4 points) Bangladesh (1 point)

Man of the Match: Shahriar Nafees
