GROUP A:
South Africa vs West Indies
at Trent Bridge
The West Indies dropped Graeme Smith twice, including once on 1, and South Africa cruised to victory by 6 wickets. A bizarre loss of wickets in the closing stages of the innings could not mask the dominance.
In seaming conditions, Shaun Pollock and Andrew Hall limited the West Indies to 214/9, largely due to the efforts of Brian Lara and Dwayne Bravo. Smith and Hall then added 203 for the first wicket, when Edwards had the latter caught at cover for 99. South Africa then lost 3 more wickets, including that of Smith (run out) for 98, before Ashwell Prince hit the winning single.

GROUP D:
India vs Kenya
at Canterbury
Sachin Tendulkar was dropped by Collins Obuya on 10, and Yuvraj Singh on 0, and they made the Kenyans pay, with innings of 98 and 83 respectively, amidst 303/6. Yuvraj was particularly severe, lashing 8 fours in his 75 balls knock. After he was dropped a second time on 57, Yuvraj scored 26 runs off his next 19 balls.
Sehwag was later dropped on 17, then went on to score 30, as the Kenyans missed precious opportunities.
The batsmen weren't much better, and they suffered the indignity of losing 2 wickets to Sourav Ganguly, who bowled all 10 of his overs on the trot. Ravindu Shah and Steve Tikolo looked solid early in the game, at 70/1, but when the captain was caught behind for 32, things began to come undone.
