Get rid of Katich and get Watson to open. He is technically correct, can move the ball around the field while Gilly goes beserk and then keep going once his eye is in. He is much more suited up the order than down and slogging. This also gives the openers a right/left hand combination and we can play both Watson and Symonds and 4 bowlers.
well has you rightly said their he is more suited to bat in the top order no doubt, but even though his technique may be good has he really opened?, i would let him bat in the top 5 at least no doubt.

GET RID OF KATICH NOWWWW...or even Martyn if he's going to keep on playing for himself.

I can't for the life of me understand why the hell Katich is selected to open the innings. It's so regressive of Australia's thinking. Why all of a sudden do we need a sheet anchor in the opening role?????

I would have thought that game against Sri Lanka in Sydney when we hit 360 after being 3-10 would have shown that a sheet anchor is unnecessary.

And how the hell can anyone say that Katich, a stodgy makeshift opener, can do a better job than Hayden?

To leave blokes like Hussey with 5 overs to face is absurd !!!!

Any of those attacking Australian batsmen can play the sheet anchor role if required.

Just pick 7 blazers and they'll do the job !

It dumbfounds me!
It's called stubborness, and a complete inability to admit that they're wrong. It's like our only hope of chasing or setting the 280+ totals that will be required on the small grounds and flat wickets of the Carribean (WC2007) will be if Katich is dismissed early.

This what Langer said about Gillespie's & Tait bowling in the recent Pura Cup Match:

``Interest before the WACA match had focused on the duel between Jason Gillespie and Shaun Tait for Glenn McGrath's bowling berth in South Africa.

Langer said on his assessment, Gillespie had bowled the better of the two on an unresponsive Perth pitch.

"I thought Dizzy bowled really well, particularly the second morning, really good areas ... but they are such different bowlers," Langer said.

"Shaun Tait is going to run in and bowl as fast he can, and he's going to have that fear factor there all the time because of his pace.

"On a very flat wicket I thought they both did serviceable sort of jobs."

sounds fair to me..

Gillespie to get the nod ahead of Tait (to join Lee, Bracken and - regrettably - Clark). I think people are forgetting that Trevor Hohns has said that Tait probably won't be picked on account of the fact that he still can't throw properly.

Well he's not going to say "I was seeing them like watermelons" is he?

I never got the thing on Watson. When he first came onto the scene he looked good. But for me, he looks a notch below the level of international players in both bating and bowling.
He's statisticly the best Australian bowler this series because Brett Lee had an aweful first two games... which he's prone to having. Stuart Clark might not be statisticly the best bowler... but stats suck! He's been Australia's best bowler, despite going for 20 runs in one over during the second game. Clark shouldn't bowl at the death. He's very economical in the middle of the game. Hogg's also done better than his stats show. Sometimes in ODI's, the worst bowler gets the most wickets because batsmen go after them. I think he should be dropped when Symond's comes in, unless there's an unresponsive wicket to spin and Australia need the extra seamer.

Ponting's captaincy was good by the way, one of his better games. I liked it how he used Lee abit at the start, middle and end. He kept Clark away from the death and even bowled Hogg cleverly with daring to bowl him late. Of course it helps when your bowlers back you up. Clarke did a good job preventing all those sixes.

I'd also get rid of Katich and Martyn. That's coming from a Damien Martyn fan who enjoys seeing his elegant strokes. I considered Martyn the best cricketer in the world for 2004 for all his centuries in the sub-continent. By in ODI's, he's too slow. He looked like he was playing for his career. Katich makes good runs, but yeah, too slow. Australia should have made 275 yesterday.

Anyway, I seriously think Australia would be lucky to win this series. SA let that one get away yesterday.

lol, well i mentioned what he said because he is one of the senior memebers of the side & if he can speak well about these 2, who are hot candidates to make test side, the selectors should take a hint.

1. Well i would say at this stage if we compare Watson to some of the other young all-rounders coming up i.e Bravo & Pathan he looks a bit below par with the ball but with the bat i'd say he pretty safe.

2. Well its obvious that Katich should, its been said over & over its just a matter of time before the selectors get it (hopefull). Martyn though should not be dropped, it would such an unfortunate turn of events.

3. If Australia win this which i strongly believe they will with the return of Symonds which will get the batting up to full-strenght, it will be because of their natural ability & not luck.

New Zeland is not consistent enough to fight for the top spot. They tend to get hammered quite frequently and most of their top players are often injured.

And by "vying for the top spot" i meant both test and Odi's and can you tell me the last time NZL won a meaningfull test series. No desrespect to NZ i do like them but dont consider them as the real top dogs.

we aint talking about tests... u said how the world cup should be good

since when do we get "Hammered quite frequently" ....i suggest u watch some NZ ODI games from the last 2 years....

I don't think seeing them like that would quite help. They'd blend in with the colour of the pitch.

Commenting on the squad chosen, NSP Chairman Trevor Hohns said: “We’ve put together a squad to cover what we believe is going to be a tough Test series in South Africa. We’ve taken into account the fact that three Tests are virtually back-to-back and we believe we’ve got adequate cover in this squad to manage that tight schedule.”

On the fast bowling quartet, Hohns said: “The decision on the make-up of the fast bowling quartet was not an easy one, given that we are without Glenn McGrath for this series. We wanted a blend of pace, youth, experience and line and length and believe we have all of these covered with our selection. Shaun Tait is coming back from a shoulder injury and we’re satisfied with the progress he’s made. He’s back bowling at full pace so we’re happy that the injury isn’t hampering his bowling. We believe he has a bright future at Test level.”

On batting selection, Hohns commented: “Damien Martyn has had some time out of the team and we feel this is the right time to slot him back in at number four. The reintroduction of Michael Clarke follows some productive time away from the Test team. Michael has worked very hard on his batting during this time and we’re very comfortable with the progress he’s made. Brad Hodge can count himself unlucky not to be included. It is fair to say that the NSP were looking for Brad to put together some really big scores in Pura Cup cricket to consolidate his position in the Test squad but unfortunately that hasn’t happened.”

Hmmmm...selectors who can't make their minds up over Martyn and Clarke and set their stall out showing intentions to play two spinners and an allrounder, but don't pick the obvious choice for the allrounder's role....

Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Martyn, Hussey and Clarke - at least the best six batsmen in the country are in the squad. Looks like, with the recall of Martyn, the selectors have one eye on the Ashes, and are out to assemble the best batting line-up in the country, regardless of age. Hodge, in my view, never really looked the part - just looked out of place.
