Hmm, wonder what to do from here - I'd be tempted to declare and have 5 overs at the openers...

I like the thinking, but it is only day 2, and with every run being so valuable, I think staying around for every last run they can squeeze out is the way to go.

They had a quick(ish) thrash instead.

Does anyone know what the lowest score that's won by an innings in a Test?

Gillespie is bowling hand grenades again. Its only a matter of time.

WOW - Hauritz opening the bowling. - no Glen McGrath.

Oh yes, it was more than a little premature.
As I said, I didn't start it out orginally as it meant to be a tour thread, just to talk abbout it.

Stop cutting off bits of my post to change what I said when I didn't quite say what your implying pal.

184-9 - if this were county Cricket there'd be points deducted.
Because two teams got bowled out on the one day?

It isn't the bowlers fault that the batsmen weren't good enough to stay out there.

No because of a substandard pitch - home side would likely be deducted points if the pitch is as bad as the scores

But wouldn't the Mumbai Groundstaff have a legitmate claim with all the rain around?

Having seen some of this match, it doesn't look that bad.

The way I see it is, a 99 run lead is as good as anything, after seeing what the pitch was doing today. I have heard some rumblings that the pitch may get easier to bat on....

I thought the Aussies batted well for a 99 run lead considering whom they were up against.

Have a look at McGrath's impressive series batting stats:
GD McGrath M:4 I:6 N.O:3 R:27 H.S:11* Ave:9.00

I think he's got a better average than Tendulkar in this series!

Granted Tendulkar's been injured and has just had two innings after months out.

The way I see it, if Australia aren't going to open the bowling with McGrath, he deserves the chance to open the batting.

Well...he did say that No. 11 is the hardest place to bat...maybe he'll have time to get a maiden Test 50 then. :p

Could anyone give me a description of what the track's doing? From the scorecards it's looking like a right bunsen, and the batsmen are trying to score as fast as possible before they get a jaffa.

From what I saw there was sh*t loads of turn & bounce for the spinners all day on Day 2, but I think the rain has freshened it up enough for the AUS quicks to take advantage & make early inroads...........

I didn't see enough to know if the pitch is going to ease any or showing any signs of uneven bounce or breaking up as yet - the IND seamers seemed to be getting decent enough pace & bounce early on.

Lots of close in catches for me would tend to suggest exaggerated bounce & turn for the spinners when playing forward defence.

From the radio commentry, it's got a lot of bounce and turn...indeed, they're saying there is too much...It makes good/ordinary spinners very tough to play, and the really good spinners too good.

Ironically, this seems to make Warnes injury a benefit for Aus..Hauritz gets edges while Warnes would have beaten the bat.

Any pitch where a side selects just 1 seamer is not good.

He won't have enough runs to play with in this game though.

I dont see why.. Maybe you have a case not to rate him quite so high but none the less it's hardly unusual that even a great player as Ponting is will strugle in some particular places.

From what I heard the LBW decision was a bit iffy any way, that and the fact he wont be aclimitised to the batting conditions quite yet haveing only been there a short while.
no im afraid, great batsman can do well against all types of bowling anywhere in the world. certainly pontings averages in india, and even in SL bar the one series havent been spectacular.
