Great day for England even if they didnt go on the fact is that they took Australia on and showed that they can really compete

First time in 493 tests that a team has scored 400+ on the first day against Australia.
shows how much test cricket has changed after all those tests  .........

Nice one Strauss, get out playing back with a angled bat 5 minutes before lunch.
do you seriously do anything other than whine?
everytime an english batsman gets out, you blame them for playing a poor shot.
that ball from warne was the first one that turned significantly for nearly 2 sessions, and easily turned more than any ball all day. it wasnt a poor shot from strauss, he just wasnt prepared for it.

dont think we can blame ponting that much, its more bad feeling & bowling than bad captaincy that ponting.
doubt it, this decision is probably even worse than the one hussain made at brisbane, especially considering that mcgrath was out of the attack. not to mention how much of a factor warne would be on this wicket if he had got to bowl last on it.

With Mcgrath out of the Old Trafford test, maybe they will drop Lee for Macgill if he doesn't have a good second innings.
where did you hear McGrath is out of the test match here???

I dont think it was has worse has hussain at the Gabba even though he lost McGrath, maybe the overcast conditions may have influenced him a bit but in Brisbane it was a hot sunny day on a equally flat pitch, that made Nasser's decision to bowl 1st super brainless.....

Aye, and it shows how far this England team are prepared to go to stick it up the Aussies. It may back-fire, but I'm very in favour of it, and I think the Aussies will be too FWIW.

Nowhere close.

You sound very wise after the event, but fact is no one really knew what the pitch would do, and it was a cloudy, overcast morning.

Most of the comment before the test were talking about how the pitch was prepared in odd circumstances and predicting whoever won the toss would probably bowl.

You also speak too soon, considering for all you know Australia might go on to get 500+

He probably deserved Tresco, but he bowled two crap deliveries to Bell and one line and length delivery that didn't move off the straight.
ahh the benefits of following cricinfo's ball by ball commentary.

In spite of some people saying he can only score runs at The Oval...
and the only way this wicket was anyway different from the oval, was that it offered no pace and was flatter on day 1.
then you consider that mcgrath wasnt playing.
then you consider he was dropped off a no ball.
then you consider how he threw his wicket away with an atrocious stroke when he should have gone on and made a big 100.....

I'll give you that one SW even though you're a cnut.
Mmmmm typo. Let's not get abusive though old chap. :p

I heard McGrath had done his cruciates (?) and was on crutches? That'd surely mean he's out as it's a back-to-back Test match?

Interesting to see Gillespie pushing 90mph again!
he did bowl a lot better today, than he has all summer. bowled the right line and lengths, which is the best you could have asked him to do on that pitch.
still not quite as good as kaspa though :p

Though the Australian physio has said he's not going to speculate. TalkSport are reknowned for talking horse-manure to drum up listeners. It says on BBC that this type of injury usually takes 6 weeks but it can't be diagnosed until the swelling has gone.

Good job it wasn't his old injured ankle though, that might have meant curtains career?!
