Golden pair for McConchie! Both vs Georgeson.

A festival of medium pace around the FC matches this round, with possible exception of CD vs Wellington.

Heaphy looks strong on the back foot. Good to have him ton up so early in his career.

I'm thinking that Mariu and Heaphy should be our NZ A openers for a bit. Get some overseas experience into them as early as possible so they can make the right adjustments. Unsure who I would pick as the third A opener. Realistically, I don't see mid-career players like Cooper and Bowes ever hammering the door down.

Off the top of my head:

Mariu
Heaphy
Young
Chapman
Nicholls
Hay, M./Chu
Foulkes/Abbas
Smith
Pringle/Ashok
Sears
Fisher

I don't see my middle order being popular but those guys are the clear best next guys in and we need to develop/resurrect them if possible, plus they will add some spine to the A side.

Quite a few bowling options. Sears might step out for someone else since I think he will go on tour with the Black Caps. I've left out some solid names.

Would add Foxcroft to any A side. Heaphy is having an excellent run with two fifties last week also. Cumming or Parkes could be a potential 3rd young opening candidate.

I've seen a lot of shots in my time, but Cooper's to get out on the first morning to Ferns deserves to join the Shannon Gabriel Hall of Fame in worst shots for the situation of all time

Only problem i see with a Heaphy is that he’s opening pretty certain he’s not an opener
For CD U19s he opened, plus middorder, plus keeper.

Basically. Same as Latham at same age.

I don't know what he sees himself as. But based on his 'public' cricket so far (e.g. a level high enough to be in cricket archive ..) , I see no indication for "not an opener".

I think he’s a better middle order player that’s all

5-fer for Davey. Not bad for Canterbury's 8th best seam bowler, career average keeps dropping.

Chu is terrible at converting. 370 at 37 this season with just the one fifty. 1400 career FC runs with five fifties and one hundred (103*). Yeah he must run out of partners all the time, playing for Otago, but still some of that has to be loss of concentration.
Chu bats too low. Always looks good and should be No6 at least. Nearly always finds himself batting with the bowlers within a couple of overs of coming in.

More fun for Fisher & Clarke. Though Hampton will probably come on and take 3 for nothing to make their efforts look less impressive again.

Great win for Otago over Canterbury.

But really have to question Canterbury's tactics when Big Gus didn't get a bowl. Hope he's not injured!

Also interesting that in a mammoth first innings, Abbas only bowled a couple of overs for Wellington. I suppose there is always a question with players like Abbas and Foulkes as to concentrate on one primary discipline over the other - but if he can't get a bowl in a pretty weak Wellington attack... Tashkoff didn't get much of a turn either - 18 overs compared to Younghusband's 42 overs.
