NZ domestic season 2023/24

Stead actually was the right guy at the right time. He was the right guy for the 2 or 3 year steady as she goes, keep it in the background, team can run it self - phase. (although even that phase almost went of the rails with Aus tour of 2019/20)

He absolutely wouldn't have been the right guy for 2012ish phase when Hesson built a team (that is the 6 year window). And he is not the right guy now (or for the last 2 years) when we've been required to start deconstructing and rebuilding.
He started alright, but that whole "Southee dropped" thing, if the rumors are true, gg time to go. You can't get rekt like that by the senior players.

So he was the best guy to get the hell out the way and put the cones out? Seems like a low bar we're setting for an international coach to suggest that was the right guy.

Some lovely shots there from Smith as well. Liking that checked straight drive.

I've been pretty cautious about calling for Southee's dismissal, but I'm getting there. Watching Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon playing him like they were handy all-rounders really has shone a harsh light on where his bowling is at. Southee's also a guy who's benefitted from being dropped in the past, so it wouldn't necessarily need to be the end of him (though at 35 it would be a hard road back).

This obviously won't happen for the 2nd test, and there's a good argument it shouldn't. As we all know well, captaincy handover processes have the potential to be messy if rushed. It's something best left for the end of the season were a panel of independent judges can review the captain's performance and come to a measured decision about whether a change is required. But boy, after watching both guys play last week (admittedly against very different standards of opposition) it's really hard to make a case for why Southee should be playing ahead of Smith.

Georgeson has graduated to opening bowler now

Not a good shot from Mariu - he does look like one to play away from his body a little awkwardly.

Why is Georgeson so in the wickets?, since about Ford Trophy.
It seems to me that he's been given a clearer role and expectation from Otago than he had with Wellington. He got shifted around a lot up here with both his bowling and batting.

Also, to me, it looks as if he's bowling with a bit more pace than he did. I guess he's still only early 20s - quite conceivable that he might have found an extra yard or two.

The explosion of bails as Davey bowled Cumming was visually spectacular.

I don't know where he is ranked on Canterbury's depth.

He is contracted, one of 8 seamers in the 16 man squad. Plus Matt Henry with a central contract. But also Cam Paul, uncontracted, got some games in Ford Trophy. They've used 10 seamers this season. But he could possbily be 8th ranked but with a sub-20 FC average.

5-fer for Davey. Not bad for Canterbury's 8th best seam bowler, career average keeps dropping.

Chu is terrible at converting. 370 at 37 this season with just the one fifty. 1400 career FC runs with five fifties and one hundred (103*). Yeah he must run out of partners all the time, playing for Otago, but still some of that has to be loss of concentration.

Fisher's dismissal of Chapman is good.

Would still prefer Fisher sometimes gets closer to the stumps in delivery though. In fact a few of our domestic bowlers seem to default to wider of the crease than average - Smith and Shipley also spring to mind.
