That's all that matters, right ? If the fans of the country for which he plays like him, then what's the beef ?
Well most of our cows were killed a few years ago and the meat (beef) was thrown away due to BSE and Foot and Mouth...I hope that answers your question about where the beef is... :)

I used to work for a lab which specialised in prions and one of them was indeed BSE (for those who don't know; Bovine Spongioform Encephalitis) so if you REALLY want to know where the beef is, ask me. :D

But not his 7-53 on debut or his bowling average of 12 in that series?

I know exactly what TC means about Ganguly. He just has one of those faces I think. Harsh!

Back on Ganguly, I think the reason people don't like him has something to do with this; every time I see him, I just have this overwhelming urge to deck him. Don't know what it is because, as has been noted, he's not the worst behaved cricketer or captain for that matter. I don't know what it is but I just want to cave his face in and would want to bounce the bejeezus out of him were I bowling to him. Not sure why..........there are several people whom you meet in your life and just instantly despise for no apparent rational reason and maybe Ganguly does that to a lot of people? :D

I got the same feeling from Scott Muller too.....ugh.

My take on Ganguly:

He is just an ordinary guy, doesn't have a whole lot of cricketing intelligence, yet isn't exactly a slow-top. When he became captain, he was more of a compromise choice because the more preferred player(Sachin) rejected the post. That might still rankle a bit as he is a proud man.

+ves:

Has supported a lot of young players through difficult times and helped them to come good.

First really aggressive and in-the-face Indian captain which is good considering that international cricket itself is highly competitive and aggressive and a high-stakes game.

One of the most stylish players around. Magnificient through the offside, he has improved his legside play in recent times. Quite consistent in one dayers(except in the last couple of series) and a proven matchwinner.

-ves:

Plays favourites just like any other captain.

His aggression on the field does not have the required impact because especially after he has become captain, he hasn't led from the front(in terms of performance) particularly in tests and one gets the feeling lots of times that he is in the team only because he is the captain.

Sorted out by pace bowlers all over the world for his weakness against the bouncer and movement outside the off-stump, he appeared to have turned a corner after the Windies and England series, but the NZ series has shown that there is still a long way to go.

Another negative: appears to think Ajit Agarkar is good...
I did mean this guy when I mentioned that he plays favourites. Just didn't want to mention his name, I thought it would be obvious, but I guess, being Chairman of the AA appreciation society, it was your duty to make it clear.

Ok let's try Chris' arguement out. Here is a scorecard from a Worcestershire match in the County Championship last year, and the lineup is the 1st XI that they tried to play during most of the season in FC Cricket:

Worcestershire vs Essex at Worcester, 15-18 May 2002

And here are the players' places of birth and teams previously played for:

SD Peters, Born: Harold Road, Essex, Previous Teams: Essex

A Singh: Born: Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, Previous Teams: Cambridge University, Warwickshire

GA Hick: Born: Salisbury (now Harare), Rhodesia (Now Zimbabwe), Previous Teams: Zimbabwe, Northern Districts, Queensland

BF Smith: Born: Corby, Northamptonshire, Previous Teams: Leicestershire, Central Districts

VS Solanki: Born: Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, Previous Teams: None

DA Leatherdale: Born: Dirk Hill, Bradford, Yorkshire, Previous Teams: None

GA Batty: Born: Bradford, Yorkshire, Previous Teams: Surrey, Surrey Cricket Board, Yorkshire

SJ Rhodes: Born: Dirk Hill, Bradford, Yorkshire, Previous Teams: Yorkshire

AJ Bichel (Overseas Player): Born: Laidley, Queensland, Previous Teams: Queensland, Australia

Kabir Ali: Born: Moseley, Birmingham, Warwickshire, Previous Teams: None

A Sheriyar: Born: Birmingham, Warwickshire, Previous Teams: Leicestershire

Right...I can't see a single player born in Worcestershire in that team. So much for home grown. And only 3 players have not played for another team before joining Worcestershire...

Well Bazza you have summed it up perfectly about Ganguly. Well most captains go through very tough times with the bat.

Mark Taylor had it, Brian Lara had it, Nasser Hussain went through it, Steve Waugh did, Sachin Tendulkar did also slightly, now Ganguly is, so really I cant blame him for that, but he must pick up his game.

He must treat himself like a young player making his way into this team, poor technique and poor results just wont do. He has to treat HIMSELF harshly.

Yes they all had bad runs, but Nasser's only lasted a season, Ganguly's has lasted the last 2 or 3 years...

No Ganguly wasn't that bad in 2002 from memory.

16 25 2 945 136 41.08 2 5
32 30 1 1114 117* 38.41 1 9

He wasn't great in 2001, but those stats are pretty good.

Mark Taylor:

1996-7 20 35 1 938 129 27.59 2 3
1997 9 9 0 111 26 12.33 0 0

He never played another ODI after that run, though had a couple more years in tests.

Steve Waugh in 2002:

11 16 1 456 103* 30.40 1 2
8 7 1 187 62 31.16 0 1

You can see why he was under fire.

Nasser Hussain in 2000:

11 19 3 240 51 15.00 0 1
17 17 1 463 95 28.93 0 5

Copped alot of flak he did. Having witnessed his performances first hand I can say he also had an unbelievable amount of bad luck in tests, although saying that Ganguly got a couple of harsh decisions in the summer.

Brian Lara:

2000 9 17 0 497 182 29.23 2 1
1999-2000 40 38 2 990 117 27.50 1 5

Tendulkar didn't really have any prolonged runs of poor form though I am sure it has happened even to him, just in shorter bursts. In conclusion, alot of the criticism levelled at Ganguly re his personal performances have been unfair, certainly in the last year. He is slowly picking up after a bad run, that is all.
