What about Richard Ellison, a former England swing bowler of the 80's? He was regarded as a guy with tons of potential, but faded away after a coupla seasons.
Now 1st XI coach at Exeter University, should anyone care.

I rekon aviska salvi is the most overrated
people were hyping him up as the next mcgrath, but his bowling is absolute tripe
Sehwag is also hyped up alot for someone with no technique

...why are so many pretty average fringe indian players hyped up so much?

IMO (& as a gross generalisation), Indians are as passionate about their cricket as the English are about their football (soccer) & used to be about their cricket. They are always looking for 'the next best thing' (particularly where it comes to combatting the Aussie dominance of the sport or ending Indias inability to win an Away Tour), especially if it is a local hero. When the local populous can number in the millions there is always going to be over the top reactions from the press & public alike - sort of like a feeding frenzy regardless of whether the news is good, bad or even based upon cold hard reality.

You just need to look at some of the posts made by some of the Indian 'terrace element' supporters in the past, although they have been conspicuous by their absence so far this season - I wonder why??? (Me thinks they have undergone some transformation and have been re-incarnated as Aussie supporters in recent times!!!)

Regardless of the rhyme or reasons, I believe that such positive passion is to be encouraged (although we may have to serve up regular doses of reality checks), as opposed to the more dour defeatest doomsayers that support other teams / countries - it all makes for good fun (except for the odd occaisions when people can take things too personally).

:D :D :D

sehwag is overrated yes.

I dunno about Salvi though. Just because the Aussies took him
for 23 runs in 3 overs in a single OD game doesn't make him overrated.

I'd like to see more of him before passing judgement.

These cricketers I rate the most or I thionk very highly, there is a few I probably have left out that should be in there, but I wont go on forever, and some I need some more convincing on the way.

And yes I do rate E.Smith, Kirtley (not in ODI cricket), Dippenaar and McKenzie.

sehwag is underrated.

sehwag has always played his best innings when required and he is a good off-spinner too.

most overrated -

Batsman - Jayasurya, Afridi

Bowlers -
Seamers - Brett Lee, Shoaib Akhtar
Spinners - Harbhajan, Kumble, Saqlain

How can you say Jayasuriya is over-rated? When he's playing well (which is most of the time), he is nothing short of Tendulkar-esque. He has a top ODI score of 189 (from 299 runs, took 161 balls), plus he has a 340 to his name in test cricket. Those of two of the highest innings ever played. His average may not be high, but when he plays well he's murderous. Therefore he cannot be over-rated. Over-rated players do not go on rampages.

If he plays well most of the time and when he does he is Tendulkar(45.14)esque, the why does he average 31.95. Jayasuriya is a sometimish customer who, on his day, can be superb.

Well done :)

I thoroughly expected an over the top tirade of why Clarke is so fantastic... I'm impressed ;)

It's even worse for Harbhajan, he wouldn't be used to this. A year or two ago everyone was calling him such a great spinner and he was on top of the world and his ego was inflated like you wouldn't believe.
Now that his balloon has kinda been busted it must be hard for him to have such a big ego when everyone thinks he's s**t.

P.Patel is rated as india's future keeper, and they're all talking about his potential and future...personally,i don't see it in him... He's over-rated

Jayasuriya is DEFINATELY not over-rated..how could ne1 come up with that?? I don't fink harbajan or saqlain are over-rated... They are both very good spin bowlers... batsmen have just learnt to pick their bowling... They were good a few years back... If saqlain was over-rated,he would b in the pakistan team..

These are in no particular order
1) S.Ganguly
2) N.Boje
3) M. Trescothik
4) S. Harmison
5) S. Fleming
6) A.Noffke
7) Cameron White
