Hoggard was overrated this summer (PwC #6), but now he's back towards a more accurate level.

Balaji fits it perfectly :)

balaji?? he has played just one match, u can't be serious. The most overrated player gotta be Hoggard, he was suppose to give Aus a hard time in this Ashes series, not only that, he was also being rated as a better bowler than Akhter!

Having said that, i must add that atleast he can last 5 days of a test match, thats something very unusual in England

Hoggard was one of the fastest players to 50 wickets in English history, he is not that bad. And no this is not another cue for more England Bashing.

Did i ever said that he is bad?? why can't you read properly?? let me simplify things for you, all i'm trying to say is that he isn't THAT GOOD(which is what this topic is about).

And where did anyone claim otherwise? Even when he reached his (then) career high, I don't remember everyone exclaiming he's a great player or anything of the sort.

Who said he was supposed to give Australia a hard time? The media was all talking aboutt Jones and Harmison before the tour, and no-one on here said anything of the sort.

As for the better than Akhtar comment, please explain?

International Debutant
I would go as far as saying Martyn can score as fast as anyone in the world when he gets going.

People forget when he was a young player he used to bat like Adam Gilchrist.

Hes still got all the shots like the six over cover the flick of the legs for six etc.

I think he is making a big mistake by fading out his pull shot in test cricket he does have a very good pull shot and used to be a compolsive hooker.

Most overrated player: Sachin Tendulkar

Most underrated player: VVS Laxman
Sure is controversy
I could think of other words to describe it!
Like what? This was a serious post btw. I can go into detail but as a rough guide, I suggest that Tendulkar is overrated because 90% of people these days say he is as good a sBradman, or the only player you can compare with Bradman, or the 2nd best player ever after Bradman.

Laxman is underrated IMO because 90% of people seem to think he has only ever played one innings and lives off that. In truth they are the people creating that impression by refusing to acknowledge he is developing into a consistent test match batsman who deserves his place in a strong batting lineup.

You put arguments for both your points, but I don't remember too many people saying Sachin as good as the Don, more that he's the best since.

International 12th Man
See what I mean!

I am also referring to other forums I visit one of which you also visit Marc. So you should know there are plenty of people out there desperate to 'prove' Sachin is some kind of god.

Ah, you see, I was only thinking about those that post sense, and don't over-react whenever one of their players takes a catch or scores a few runs.

comming this from you is strange, Hoggard was being tipped as a better bowler than Shoaib (in the thread Hoggard vs Akhter) infact some Brits even compared Hoggard with Waseem/Waqar:lol:
I had said at that time that i will wait and see how Hoggard will perform against the Aussies, as judging a bowler by his performance against Australia was the criteria set by some experts!

Now we have seen it all!

Reminder that the Hoggard scenario was a masquerade/split identity...

All that Hoggard was overrated by was the PwC Ranking, however this is ironed out now.

Just reviewed that thread, and it weas misinterpreted - he was not compared with Wasim or Waqar - what was said is this:

if hoggard was a pakisani the pakistani fans would call if the nect wasim or younis

At the time, he was taking loads of wickets early in his career, and I think that statement truly sums up what would've happened had he been Pakistani.

Incidentally, reviewing that thread, only one person said he'd pick Hoggard ahead of Shoaib in Tests, and that is someone who was quickly shouted down.

Two things, if thats how things work in Sub continent, then why Akhter isn't tipped as the next Akram over there??

Secondarily, you said that only one person said that he would pick Hoggard over Akhter, but you forgot that only one person was prasing Balaji yet you included Balaji's name in the most overrated players lists!
