Indian domestic season 2005-06

This is a good thing.....even extras in Ranji teams seem to be getting attention. Anyway, given how the frontliners Zaheer and Jaffer are performing, would you have both in the Indian XI for the first Test? Jaffer's inclusion is doubtful, but Zaheer should return. As for Agarkar, Mumbai needs him far more than the national side. He's the domestic Botham/Hadlee/Imran, but a mere bits-and-pieces player at Test level. Or half of that.

I want Gambhir in for the first test, he shouldn't be dropped after a few bad matches. If he does poorly, bring in Jaffer for the 2nd test. As far as the bowlers are concerned, Pathan, Zaheer, Kumble and Harbhajan should play in every match. If a 5th bowler is required, it should be RP Singh, but it will be Agarkar ...

I agree. Indian cricket has been blighted far too much by the hire-and-fire policy. Gambhir is a good young talent and should be given as much exposure as possible.

I would persist with Gambhir for the entire series unless he looks really out of form. No matter if he doesn't score and gets out to a momentary lapse of concentration, as long as he doesn't look out of sorts the team should try to make newcomers comfortable. Taking jaffer and not playing him might sound harsh, so if things are going fine, maybe the team might consider playing both him and gambhir in the third test. Like I said in the official england-india thread, it would be a good way to compare them both in identical conditions.

As to Agarkar, I would keep him as a 5th bowler for that little extra bit he has with the bat (does he? :D ) over RP Singh. But if it comes to taking one of them as a 4th bowler, I would take RP Singh.

Folks, be prepared for a massive shake-up in this domestic season. Railways have lost the first-innings lead, all out for 140. They've already suffered a few times because of this innings lead rule, and if they lose this match, they'll be relegated to the Plate division. The famous Munaf Patel finally broke the five-wicket jinx and took six. Wait and watch....maybe the Indian Justin Kemp will finish this season a more refined player. It will be unfortunate if Railways get relegated, especially for JP Yadav– relegation to the Plate division may just close the door on India hopefuls.

Unfortunately, we all missed out on this one. Ganguly wanted to practice his bowling for the tour of Pakistan, so he bowled as many overs as a strike bowler, but started running all over the pitch (not surprising, he's done that in the past too) and after four warnings, he had to be taken off. This is what happens when you don't bowl regularly and suddenly choose to bowl lots.

Another highlight for all the wrong reasons happened in Ahmedabad. Some fan taunted Ramesh Powar from within the playing area. The bulky Mumbai offie was not going to take this lightly, and he charged at that fan with a shoe in hand, restrained by his teammates and then fined 50% of his match fees. The Mumbai manager lodged a complaint with the Gujarat Cricket Association about someone entering the playing area, a breach of security. Looks murky, but the security was no less guilty. Today, he made a few nasty comments. Tomorrow, it could be a man with a machine gun in the playing area.

Whatever it takes!!!
Tamil Nadu have set 497 to win for Bengal. Badani has played an awesome knock on a tough pitch and along with Sriram (who seems to have been around for eternity) has given the platform for the TN bowlers, among whom Jesuraj continues to impress. Balaji being in the side could have made the difference.

For Bengal, Jhunjhunwala and Ganguly are continuing their good form, but it remains to be seen whether it is enough for them to save the game.,

well lets hope that doesnt happen, because railways has genuine contenders in yadav and kartik (potential candidate parida, hypothetical candidate bangar & your own candidate pagnis). but this is more good news than bad news, because we need munaf patel and vrv singh to step it up and break into the national team more than we need jp yadav at the moment ... so i hope these two keep roaring on the domestic circuit ... along with piyush chawla, suresh raina and robin uthappa

Dumb, unimaginative captaincy by Baroda's Jacob Martin has the Western side scoring a massive 449 over SEVEN sessions, where the batsmen just occupied the crease without doing much. They should hae sent in Yusuf Pathan after the dismissal of Pinal Shah and the other centurion, because they could get a smaller yet substantial total a lot quicker. The absence of Zaheer didn't help Baroda's cause much either, as Services amassed 388. Still, that silly first-innings lead rule gave Baroda two points.

Equally dumb of Railways to crawl to 105/5, when they could have chased that total of 300 by going for big shots and sneaky singles. They were not facing a very strong bowling attack bar Munaf, and with big-hitters like Yadav and Bangar, it was not far from them. Going for a win would get them more than just two points and save them from the drop.

With that silly idea of playing out the last session rather than chasing down the target, they may just face a drop. Their chances of staying in the top tier improve thanks to Karnataka, who have defeated Delhi by a massive margin of over 100 runs.

Frankly, Delhi deserves to get relegated, since there's nobody in that team who's an India prospect, bar Sehwag, Nehra, Gambhir and Bhandari. their batting is average, their bowling isn't one with much pace (and average spinners too) while their fielding is suspect. Worst of all, they don't have an all-rounder. There's not much to look for in this side.

As for Railways, Yadav is a genuine contender, especially in ODI's. He's a seasoned all-rounder who has not only taken wickets in bulk, but has also scored lots of runs for the teams for which he has played. Munaf is a newcomer to this lot and his fielding is weak. VR Singh is just a giant version of Agarkar (talking of batting) except that he has more pace. None of them can replace JP Yadav as an all-rounder in ODI's, on present form. Munaf is a gamble, with massive return when he gets it right, but the best bet by a long way is JP Yadav.

Karthik and Parida are a pair, and it's tough to separate them. They're not so useful on their own. I recommended Pagnis as a first-choice opener in ODI's (And Test reserve) and Bangar as a one-dayer specialist pinch-hitter and change seamer. No, Agarkar is not scoring enough runs to add value to his selection. Yes, Irfan is scoring enough, but you don't need him to get big hundreds. Rather than leave it solely on him to score, let another all-rounder share that duty with him. And provide a full-time bowling option as well. Piyush Chawla may have to finish one more season, since this is his first. Likewise Pravin Kumar. Raina and Uthappa are not needed in this team, unless there's an injury or someone's badly out of form.

Tamil Nadu have defeated Bengal by 222 runs. Nelson seems to have struck again. Ganguly has played another really good knock (Boy is he giving headaches to the team management) but the others have fallen apart around him. Jesuraj continues to impress with another 5 fer.

Bengal are not a stable team, and often triumph on some very good performances by a few individuals. TN, on the other hand, play well as a team, especially in limited-overs matches.

Take a look at these figures:

MUNAF PATEL:
  • RUNS: 217 (Fifth highest in team)
  • BATTING AVERAGE: 21.87 with one score over 50
  • STRIKE RATE: 85.18 (so far)
  • WICKETS: 25 in 6 matches (Highest in team)
  • BOWLING AVERAGE: 21 (Highest in team, 10th among top wicket-takers this season) with one 5WI
Quite a find for Maharashtra, and a good finish to the season may have him in the Indian team or at least in the reserves.

It's a dark, dark day in the history of the Ranji trophy. Railways, who were champions (or at least finalists in a drawn match), have been relegated to the Plate division. This is one team with four national team contenders, including two all-rounders, given how much the Indian team needs one. Their opening batsman was as good as those considered for a national call-up, but never got a fair try, and with this team relegated, they may have to wait a whole season to get back in the picture. Worse, they only lost one match, while Delhi lost three and still stay on. This first-innings lead has caused excess damage and should be scrapped. Immediately!

Its not as if they did not know the rules before hand. They did not perform as they should have; hence got relegated...big deal..

Knowing the rules beforehand does diddly-squat for you when you play attacking cricket for the straight win and the opposition play solely for the first-innings lead and the draw.
