Badani– He was given ample chances, but never looked a good fit in one-dayers. When a few wickets fell, he would start blocking and leaving for a very long time, because of which the run rate would drop. That weakened many of the team's chases. No wonder they never won a one-day tournament in which he figured, bar that tour of Pakistan, when he only played one match. He can make the Test side, but for ODI's, they need to look elsewhere. Laxman is leagues ahead of Badani as a batsman and a fantastic slip fielder– this raw, inexperienced pace attack needs slip support. Badani is no Jonty Rhodes, and his running between wickets is dreadful. IF his name should be discussed, you should also consider the likes of Sriram, Sharath, Badrianth, Kaif, Raina, Venugopal, Manhas and Mazumdar, because all of them are equally useful. But none of them are really necessary.
Other middle-order batsmen– Raina has hardly got an opportunity to bat, and has been fantastic on the field. Venugopal has been a tad disappointing, but he's never faced anyone with the pace of Shane Bond, even at A-team level. Laxman is a class act, and to replace him, you have to have a Jonty Rhodes or a Lance Klusener, otherwise the replacement is simply not good enough. Dinesh Mongia was one of Ganguly's boys and a misfit in ODI's. Rohan Gavaskar had decent temperament, but batting at number seven weakened him a great deal.
Munaf Patel– Rush him into the national side.....for the ODI's against Pak and the entire England series!!! Now THIS is a player the team could use. He's a strike pacer and also capable of hitting big shots regularly. Imagine the advantage with such a selection. You have your answer to Justin Kemp in ODI's, and you can play your top two spinners EVERYWHERE in Tests. He's a great find for Maharashtra and has ripped through the Mumbai batting lineup, taking five wickets.
The mystery all-rounder from the north– Who....is....Sachin Rana? He's had a dream run with bat and ball this season, but we have to see him to get a clear picture. Yusuf Pathan from Baroda may not have the most flattering statistics, but he's a muscular clone of Flintoff, who can hit the big shots just like the burly Lancashire all-rounder. His leg-spin is similar to Kumble, where he uses bounce he gets from his height. Joginder Sharma has very good all-round figures, but he bats like Kaif and bowls like Balaji. We've seen enough of them, and heard/read enough by those who have seen them. But what's Rana like? We don't know. Rana's bowling isn't something you can rely on to get you ten wickets, in a match (he's got 18 wickets in five matches) but he's batting like a seasoned professional. But if he's a giant, hmmm......the selectors have one more option, especially in ODI's.
