TOMORROW: Will Munaf rip through the Mumbai batting lineup? Will JP Yadav inspire Railways to a turnaround? Will Delhi get relegated? Will upstarts Haryana cause another upset? Wait and watch!!!

Whatever it takes!!!
TN have done really well on Day 1 against Delhi. TN are 260 odd for 2. Sriram made 43 and the other opener got out cheaply. But the skipper, Badrinath with 113 and Badani with 91 have done really well. Both of them will continue tomorrow, looking for a huge score. Delhi needs to somehow get a couple of quick wickets.

P.S: TN are playing 5 specialist bowlers as well, which is a very positive move.

TN don't need five bowlers. Their opening batsman, Vidyut, was a very effective left-arm spinner, and he bowled well in the last season as well. Had he been bowling regularly, he would be a contender for the national ODI squad.

END OF DAY ONE.....

Munaf Patel smashed five fours and a six on his way to 39 off 40 balls, and then returned to take an early wicket, after Maharashtra were dismissed for 213. Mumbai are at 20/2.

Yusuf Pathan scored 72 off 104 deliveries, ending as the top scorer as Baroda were bundled out for 229 against Hyderabad. Hyderabad are at 28/1.

Services are at 226/5, with Haryana's Joginder Sharma getting two wickets and Sachin Rana, three.

Badani's in incredible form. He appears an ODI cast-off and he's not even 30. An option for 2007 WC if injuries/Indian hysteria following small failure kick in.

Sachin Rana appears to be a rising player as bowling all-rounder. Probably not got the talent for internationals though?

Badani is performing really well. Tamil Nadu players keep getting ignored some how. :(
I've always though Badani got a raw deal...particularly in ODIs. Why on earth someone like Dinesh Mongia kept getting selected while Badani sat out is a mystery.

Among middle-order batsmen, Suresh Raina and Venugopal Rao probably head the list of reserves (Kaif, Yuvraj and Dravid are regulars). Laxman and Ganguly are also determined to stake a claim if an opportunity arises. I don't see Badani getting much of a chance at this point.

I think Badani should be higher than Laxman and Ganguly in the ODI stakes simply because he is a better fielder AND a decent bowler. Raina is not making the big runs expected of him and neither is Kaif. Both of them blew good starts for UP against Andhra. And Rao hasn't been exactly making the headlines with his scores either. If the selectors are really keen on selecting guys on form, Badani should AT LEAST be discussed.

Badani has been dismissed for 94. Early wicket for Delhi. Interestingly, Dinesh Kaarthick is batting at 5 ahead of Sharath, a specialist batsman who has done well this season.

Massive turnaround of form here as Mumbai are bowled out for 175. Maharashtra are on 24/0 at the moment.

TN have declared at 481/6 and Delhi are 40 odd for 2. Badrinath has gone on to complete his double century and there were good 46 run knocks from Dinesh Kaarthick and Sharath, both of them seem to have perished in the lookout for quick runs.

Gujarat are 246/9 against Karnataka. Karnataka were bowled out for 163. Gujarat are in the driver's seat there.

Bengal are 148/2 in reply to Railways' 259. Railways' poor season continues.

UP have made 365 in their first innings. Andhra are 76/2 in reply.

Badani– He was given ample chances, but never looked a good fit in one-dayers. When a few wickets fell, he would start blocking and leaving for a very long time, because of which the run rate would drop. That weakened many of the team's chases. No wonder they never won a one-day tournament in which he figured, bar that tour of Pakistan, when he only played one match. He can make the Test side, but for ODI's, they need to look elsewhere. Laxman is leagues ahead of Badani as a batsman and a fantastic slip fielder– this raw, inexperienced pace attack needs slip support. Badani is no Jonty Rhodes, and his running between wickets is dreadful. IF his name should be discussed, you should also consider the likes of Sriram, Sharath, Badrianth, Kaif, Raina, Venugopal, Manhas and Mazumdar, because all of them are equally useful. But none of them are really necessary.

Other middle-order batsmen– Raina has hardly got an opportunity to bat, and has been fantastic on the field. Venugopal has been a tad disappointing, but he's never faced anyone with the pace of Shane Bond, even at A-team level. Laxman is a class act, and to replace him, you have to have a Jonty Rhodes or a Lance Klusener, otherwise the replacement is simply not good enough. Dinesh Mongia was one of Ganguly's boys and a misfit in ODI's. Rohan Gavaskar had decent temperament, but batting at number seven weakened him a great deal.

Munaf Patel– Rush him into the national side.....for the ODI's against Pak and the entire England series!!! Now THIS is a player the team could use. He's a strike pacer and also capable of hitting big shots regularly. Imagine the advantage with such a selection. You have your answer to Justin Kemp in ODI's, and you can play your top two spinners EVERYWHERE in Tests. He's a great find for Maharashtra and has ripped through the Mumbai batting lineup, taking five wickets.

The mystery all-rounder from the north– Who....is....Sachin Rana? He's had a dream run with bat and ball this season, but we have to see him to get a clear picture. Yusuf Pathan from Baroda may not have the most flattering statistics, but he's a muscular clone of Flintoff, who can hit the big shots just like the burly Lancashire all-rounder. His leg-spin is similar to Kumble, where he uses bounce he gets from his height. Joginder Sharma has very good all-round figures, but he bats like Kaif and bowls like Balaji. We've seen enough of them, and heard/read enough by those who have seen them. But what's Rana like? We don't know. Rana's bowling isn't something you can rely on to get you ten wickets, in a match (he's got 18 wickets in five matches) but he's batting like a seasoned professional. But if he's a giant, hmmm......the selectors have one more option, especially in ODI's.

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
In the 40 matches Badani played, he batted 36 times and was not out 10 times. He managed 3 50s and a century. An average of 33.

In the last two series Badani played down under and in Pakistan, his scores read as -

15 3 caught wk 2 W VB Series 3 v Zim in Aus 2003/04 at Hobart [2080]
DNB - - 1 W VB Series 5 v Aus in Aus 2003/04 at Brisbane (d/n) [2084]
1* 7 not out 1 W VB Series 6 v Zim in Aus 2003/04 at Brisbane (d/n) [2085]
DNB - - 1 L VB Series 7 v Aus in Aus 2003/04 at Sydney (d/n) [2086]
5 7 bowled 1 W VB Series 8 v Zim in Aus 2003/04 at Adelaide (d/n) [2087]
34* 6 not out 2 W VB Series 12 v Zim in Aus 2003/04 at Perth (d/n) [2095]
60* 7 not out 1 L VB Series F1 v Aus in Aus 2003/04 at Melbourne (d/n) [2097]
18 7 run out 2 L VB Series F2 v Aus in Aus 2003/04 at Sydney (d/n) [2098]
8* 7 not out 1 W 1st ODI v Pak in Pak 2003/04 at Karachi [2112]

After a 60* vs Australia in the first final and a run out in the second final, he played just one match vs Pakistan - had an 8* and found himself out of the team.

The 60 off 81 balls helped India post a total after the first 6 batsmen were out and India found itself at 75/6.

Badani given ample opportunities? Not really.

Suresh Raina has done well in his limited opportunities. He's already played a large role in a India run-chase, and that's a pretty big deal. He's also the best fielder in Team India, at least in the class of Yuvraj and Kaif. Venugopal Rao is also a solid batsman, but he might be more suited to the test format because he seems to be more of a Dravid of the past. Badani and Sriram are both adequate fielders, useful bowlers and worth another try with the bat, but only if there's an injury/loss of form AND gambhir and raina (and dare i say perhaps laxman and ganguly) have been given an opportunity.

The Railways v Bengal match is just getting more and more interesting - Railways are struggling to avoid relegation and they have a 6 run lead with Bengal having 3 wickets in hand, but then take a look at this extra-ordinary over by Harvinder Singh -

W . . W . W

This is what happened in that 1 over -
Code:
LR Shukla c Bangar b Harvinder Singh 17 24 19 3 0
S Singh c Wankhede b Harvinder Singh 0 3 3 0 0
SS Lahiri lbw b Harvinder Singh 0 2 2 0 0

FoW: 5-248 (Shukla, 98.1 ov), 6-248 (Singh, 98.4 ov), 7-248 (Lahiri, 98.6 ov).
Before that over, Bengal were just 11 runs behind with 6 wickets in hand and after that over, they were still 11 runs behind but with only 3 wickets in hand.

Railways have again been done hard by the 1st innings lead rule. Its time this rule was finished off. They bowled well and yet conceded the 1st innings lead to Bengal despite having them at 253/9 with 6 runs behind and 1 wicket in hand despite a sensational turnaround by Harvinder Singh taking 3 wickets in 1 over.

Uttar Pradesh, have a good chance to get into the semi-finals. They are at 9 points currently and this win over Andhra, will take them to 13, well ahead of Punjab at 11 and Hyderabad at 9. Hyderabad just lost to Baroda clearing Uttar Pradeshs path of getting into the semi-finals. Baroda are the top team in that group.

Maharashtra, have a good chance to win this match against Mumbai as Mumbai are struggling at 155/7 and need 71 more runs to win with 3 wickets in hand. And, they have already conceded that 1st innings lead to Maharashtra. Munaf Patel, has been the hero of this win? over Mumbai and its strange that last season, he himself used to play for Mumbai.

For Delhi, Rajat Bhatia, batted well for the 1st time in this season making 152* to take Delhi to 366/8 giving them a outside chance of taking a 1st innings lead. Bhatia, shared a vital 102 run partnership for the 8th wicket after a slight collapse had Delhi at 228/7 after Manhas dismissal for 89.

Karnataka, are about to lose the match to Gujarat and maybe their chances of progressing to the semi-finals. Gujarat, at 106/3, need another 37 runs to win with 7 wickets in hand. Also, Karnataka had conceded the 1st innings lead to Gujarat. If Bengal win the match against Railways, then Bengal will get into the semis ahead of Karnataka with 13 points as compared to 12 of Karnataka.

The likely semi-finals are going to be -

Mumbai(A1) v Uttar Pradesh(B2)
Karnataka?/Bengal?(A2) v Baroda(B1)

We've spoken of Sachin Rana, and another mystery all-rounder is making waves playing for Uttar Pradesh. Pravin Kumar scored 70 runs in 57 deliveries, then took five wickets, and one more in the second innings. Piyush Chawla didn't have it so easy, though. Both should be watched by the selectors if they're looking for young talent.

2 mysterious all-rounders have been discovered this season from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in Sachin Rana(21) and Pravin Kumar(19). Pravin Kumar, in this ongoing UP v Andhra match, has already scored a 78 off 68 balls with 4 6s(looks like a strong built player if this innings is considered) and he is only 19. Also, he has taken 9 wickets in this match and has batted and bowled UP into the semi-finals.

Sachin Rana - Top-scorer for Haryana this season and a good season with the ball too, not much being known about his built.
