and if you eliminate his innings against kenya ,b'desh and zimbabwe while opening you will find that he has a lower average there too. regardless the fact is that sehwag and tendulkar have significantly lower averages batting anywhere outside the openers slot while ganguly seems to be doing just fine.
The average is not the relevant thing. The number of big innings is and Ganguly is yet to get a century against a good team outside of the opening slot. Also he and Tendulkar have one of the best partnerships opening the batting.

Yuvraj at 3 and Pathan at 4 and a bowler/keeper in the XI would be the only changes I would suggest. Even better with Powar at 7/8.

The top 4 was picked so that you have hard hitters at the top, and these four like the ball coming on the bat at a good pace. Yuvraj is likely to open in Tests, so the higher he bats, the better. Ganguly at 7 may look strange, but he can play spinners well, and he should start against them. The top order has better players of pace, and the middle order, better players of spin.

PLAN: Sachin should stay till the end of the innings. Sehwag can bat as he usually does, but improve shot selection. Yuvraj and especially Pathan have to hit a lot of boundaries and sixes in the first 15 overs. Even if they do get out, Dravid is there to save the team. Laxman, Ganguly and Powar can take on the spinners. You have batting till 8, and the bowlers can take risks, since they have their bowling to fall back on. Unconventional, but worth a try.
:@ How can you say that!?! That is an insult to Dravid, Laxman and all the batsmen behind him! (Pathan)

IMO ,

Sehwag
Ganguly
Laxman
Tendulkar
Dravid
Yuvraj
Kaif
Powar
Pathan
Balaji/Zaheer/Nehra/Agarkar(if AA ,bat him ahead of Pathan)

If India finds an allrounder ( keeping-batting allrounder or bowling-batting allrounder , drop one of the batsmen for him )

And seriously , India should try Powar for Kumble or Harbhajan....Kumble has a bowling average of over 32 in recent times anyway...He has a bowling average of 44 vs Australia in ODIs.I dont see Powar doing any worse than 44 vs Australia .

Nate

You'll Never Walk Alone
sehwag
tendulkar
laxman
dravid
ganguly
yuvraj
patel
kumble
agarkar
pathan
balaji

after typing that i am now trying to think where the indians get their other 10 overs... probably a mix of (mainly) tendulkar, (and a bit of) sehwag and yuvraj. just no ganguly :p

why is the average not a relevant thing?2 50s in 2 games is just about the same as 1 100 in 2 games.
and mind you hes only played 23 games at no 3, quite a few against minnows....how many centuries do you expect him to score?
regardless as i said earlier, both sehwag and tendulkar have struggled outside the openers slot while ganguly hasnt....so perhaps its better for the team?

If Patel can open the innings, when he can't hit a six and plays out too many dot balls, why not open with Yuvraj or Pathan instead? Pathan played Murali like a professional. He has real batting talent and hitting power missing in the Indian team, except for Sehwag, Yuvraj and Dravid, and can get his sixes and fours through clean shots. Yuvraj was picked by Ganguly as a Test opener because of his aggression, so why not open with him in ODI's as well? The South Africans and English have the same openers in Tests and ODI's, don't they? Even Tendulkar should go down the order; he is having problems against the new ball.

Give the man a chance, won't you? After all, this is only ODI cricket, not a Test match! It's far better than opening with Patel.

But the guy has batting talent and is doing well in the limited chances he is getting. He is certainly better than Patel atleast in ODI's where he has more range of strokes than Patel. Has the Indian team management fallen prey to Parthiv's baby looks  ? Karthik is the more suited guy for onedayers or they should have picked an additional batsman in the squad.

While I won't want to OPEN with Pathan, I will certainly have at #7. If they don't Dravid as keeper, then they should bring this new guy dinesh karthik (whoever he is, i have only heard good things about him). Parthiv patel should go out of the team and complete his high school first.

And who's this Dinesh Karthik? There are several more established wicketkeepers who are more dependale- Nayan Mongia is still the best by a long distance and Vinayak Samant is very dependable. For batting, you have Vijay Dahiya and Pankaj Dharmani. Why go in for Parthiv Patel II?

Arjun, why do you keep bringing in Nayan "aiegaa" mongia into the picture. I have no doubt that he will not play for India again. And that's a good thing. His batting was a disgrace. And also, he's got on and won't be playing for too long.

Vijay Dahiya and pankaj dharmani have both been already tried and they did not impress much. However, I have been hearing only good things about this dinesh karthik guy. He had a great under-19 WC.

Nayan Mongia is still far better than every other keeper in India. He is very dependable and does not drop catches. Besides, it does not matter how good a wicketkeeper's batting is, his wicketkeeping is more important. At least he "aiegaa"'s for genuine cases and not repeatedly, even for dropped catches and missed stumpings.

They're a lot better now. Dahiya's still good enough to make the Indian team, with Parthiv Patel as the only wicketkeeper in the options. And when has Dharmani ever been tried? He has been playing for many years in Ranji and has a healthy average of 52, and he is a decent wicketkeeper. A whole lot of under-19 players were rushed into the Indian team in 2000, but none of them were ready for the international stage and that's why they not only lost the ICC Champions Trophy in Nairobi which should have been won, but were thrashed and crunched in Sharjah by the Lankans. Let Dinesh play as many matches as Samant and Ratra, then we'll know how good he is.

Why dinesh karthik?

You can't teach the mental toughness of Sharapova to all 6 ft Tennis player. It has to come from inside.

I see Dinesh Karthik soon in Indian team once his growth (height) settled. He need to adjust his timing with wicket keeping as he is already growing.

Once he settled he will be in Indian Team because this dude is already showing fearless attitude in BATTING like sehwag. All he needs to do is improve his wicket keeping.

With parthiv Patel , his batting is awful and his wicket keeping as well. He missed many runout chances and byes.

So all he needs to do is improve his wicket-keeping.

So why pick him then?

Domestic runs shouldn't make someone a Test Keeper.

India need wicket keeping Batsman , not just wicket keeper.
There are 100 times better wicket keeper than parthiv patel in india.

India is looking for Good wicket keeping Batsman.

Dinesh Karthik fits the mould. He nees special training in wicket keeping.

He can bat like sehwag.

But when Dravid is doing a passable job, why replace him with a "specialist" who needs keeping training to come up to standard?

Dravid hates it. He is just keeping quiet. He already showed his displeasures through srinath column.

And also dravid can get injured by doing wicket keeping. And putting Indias no 1. batsman at risk is pure stupidity on the part of Indian management.

Parthiv Patel can do wicket keeping for Test cricket not for one DAY.

He blows.
