Cricketweb ODI Rankings

I criticised the ICC test rankings in a previous thread , because SA's test ranking dropped from 3 to 6 just by the mere fact of losing an away Test!!

But seeing these rankings, I just cannot understand how you justify NZ ranking at 6 (despite their overwhelming successes home and away) and SA ranking of 2 (despite their disasters in ODI's in past few years) .

I have to agree with Thierry Henry on this one!! Your ranking system needs a rethink, may be .

Steulen

Bear in mind that NZ's success is relatively new. There are a lot of series remaining (I'd guess) from a few years ago when they were occasionally brilliant, but consistently losing series.

Likewise, SA's disasters tend to stand out (no wonder, given the magnitude of their disasters), while they win an awful lot in between (just not when it really matters)

I agree that NZ's away ranking should be low...but NZ surely has one of the best home records. From memory we've won our last 7 or 8 ODI Series at home. Excluding teams like Bangladesh & Zimbabwe.

OK.. some more points to clear up:

NZ are 6th, although you may notice they are just 4 points behind Pakistan, which is hardly anything. Why are NZ so low? Well the reason is whilst NZ have a very good home record, beating everyone except Australia and Sri Lanka, their away record is very poor. England are the only side NZ have beaten away from home and they even lost in Zimbabwe. This result is particularly punishing in terms of their ranking because NZ are the only team other than Bangladesh and Kenya to have been beaten by Zimbabwe. New Zealand also have a poor neutral track record, England and West Indies being the only team of note they have a winning record against. Hence with a good home record but very poor away record, New Zealand sit mid-table overall.

The other query regarded South Africa being 2nd - well apart from Australia, South Africa have beaten every other side at home, and convincingly. Away from home they have been inconsistent, losing more series than they have won, but mostly against strong home sides such as Australia, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Again on neutral ground they have a good record. So overall South Africa are the strongest home team, average away, but overall very good.

As Steulen points out the rankings are based on two series, so whilst New Zealand have been very successful in recent times, if you go back a few years they were average at best, and that is why they don't have a very high ranking. Clearly they will climb the rankings so long as they maintain their recent form. As for South Africa, they have lost a few away series of late but are rewarded for their consistent performances over recent years.

I hope this helps answer your queries, if you have any more comments or queries please post, and my apologies for taking so long to answer in the first place. :)

Just to add a bit more in terms of comparisons between the ICC and CW rankings:

The ICC rankings are highly susceptible to recent form and as such are prone to rapid fluctuations. Lose one series, and you can slide from 2nd to 6th (as shown by South Africa in the Test rankings). The CW rankings, however, place a lot more emphasis on sustained performances over a period of approximately three years.

So basically, keep winning, and you'll be on the way up.

India in 4th, not too bad i say, although in my opinion we have the talent to be 2nd best. Hopefully a good ICC Champions performance will help us up, although our best player is crocked.

Where'd you hear that ? To the best of my knowledge , AA is just fine , no injury worries. Rest assured .

Well despite losing the final to Australia, Pakistan were the real winners from the Videocon Cup, with their victory over India giving them a sweep on neutral territory, and moving them above India into 4th place in the table.

Home
South Africa 1359 (+2)
Australia 1314 (-3)
Sri Lanka 1159 (+2)
New Zealand 1054 (+1)

Another update later when Sri Lanka complete their 5-0 whitewash of South Africa.

International 12th Man
Well Sri Lanka have just made it a 5-0 sweep, closing the gap to South Africa in second by 41 points to 92. By virtue of having a losing record at home to South Africa, Pakistan lose out and drop back below India into 5th place.

Home
South Africa 1357 (-2)
Australia 1313 (-1)
Sri Lanka 1192 (+33)
New Zealand 1049 (-5)
West Indies 954 (-4)
India 939 (+20)
England 901 (-4)
Pakistan 846 (-17)
Zimbabwe 242

Australia 1335 (+6)
Pakistan 1029 (-22)
South Africa 954 (-48)
India 991 (+16)
Sri Lanka 934 (-1)
England 895 (+4)
New Zealand 815 (+4)

Pakistan 938 (-19)
New Zealand 932 (-1)
England 898
West Indies 852
Zimbabwe 348
Kenya 230
Bangladesh 38

Next update will be next week after England's 3 match series against India. The series will replace a 1-0 India victory, so England have a chance to make up some ground on the three teams ahead of them as we head towards the Champions Trophy!

International 12th Man
Well here is the latest update to include England 2-1 India and Australia 1-0 Pakistan.

Home
South Africa 1350 (-7)
Australia 1302 (-11)
Sri Lanka 1188 (-4)
New Zealand 1043 (-6)
England 952 (+51)
West Indies 950 (-4)
India 939
Pakistan 844 (-2)
Zimbabwe 242
Kenya 123
Bangladesh 33 (+1)

England jump two places in the home standings after beating India.

Away
Australia 1338 (+3)
Pakistan 1039 (+10)
South Africa 959 (+5)
India 937 (-54)
Sri Lanka 934
England 895
New Zealand 821 (+6)
West Indies 753 (+4)
Zimbabwe 457 (+3)
Kenya 337
Bangladesh 43

And India fall back below South Africa in the away standings.

Total
Australia 1320 (-4)
South Africa 1154 (-1)
Sri Lanka 1062 (-1)
Pakistan 942 (+4)
India 941 (-24)
New Zealand 932
England 924 (+26)
West Indies 852
Zimbabwe 350 (+2)
Kenya 230
Bangladesh 38

So Pakistan move above India into 4th place but it's incredibly tight between 4 teams heading into the Champion Trophy. The top 3 and bottom 4 are unlikely to change much but alot to play for in the middle of the table.

i find it stragne that considering nz have won 15 from 17 odis. including against pakistan south africa england and wi, we are still ranked so low

Look at the record before that. The CW rankings tend to take into account the last three years, as opposed to the last week.

yea, but this form has been over just under a year. surely recent results should cary more rating?

these rankings are fully weird... u cant base a team over the last 3 years imho...

I mean south africa 2nd in the world ? lol

i personally like the icc rankings as it does include upto the last 3 years of results, but with more powerful weighting for the latest season

Hypothetical question. Which ranking would you like best if CW had New Zealand at second place and ICC had them in sixth? :p
