I criticised the ICC test rankings in a previous thread , because SA's test ranking dropped from 3 to 6 just by the mere fact of losing an away Test!!

But seeing these rankings, I just cannot understand how you justify NZ ranking at 6 (despite their overwhelming successes home and away) and SA ranking of 2 (despite their disasters in ODI's in past few years) .

I have to agree with Thierry Henry on this one!! Your ranking system needs a rethink, may be .

Bear in mind that NZ's success is relatively new. There are a lot of series remaining (I'd guess) from a few years ago when they were occasionally brilliant, but consistently losing series.

Likewise, SA's disasters tend to stand out (no wonder, given the magnitude of their disasters), while they win an awful lot in between (just not when it really matters)

I agree that NZ's away ranking should be low...but NZ surely has one of the best home records. From memory we've won our last 7 or 8 ODI Series at home. Excluding teams like Bangladesh & Zimbabwe.

OK.. some more points to clear up:

NZ are 6th, although you may notice they are just 4 points behind Pakistan, which is hardly anything. Why are NZ so low? Well the reason is whilst NZ have a very good home record, beating everyone except Australia and Sri Lanka, their away record is very poor. England are the only side NZ have beaten away from home and they even lost in Zimbabwe. This result is particularly punishing in terms of their ranking because NZ are the only team other than Bangladesh and Kenya to have been beaten by Zimbabwe. New Zealand also have a poor neutral track record, England and West Indies being the only team of note they have a winning record against. Hence with a good home record but very poor away record, New Zealand sit mid-table overall.

The other query regarded South Africa being 2nd - well apart from Australia, South Africa have beaten every other side at home, and convincingly. Away from home they have been inconsistent, losing more series than they have won, but mostly against strong home sides such as Australia, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Again on neutral ground they have a good record. So overall South Africa are the strongest home team, average away, but overall very good.

As Steulen points out the rankings are based on two series, so whilst New Zealand have been very successful in recent times, if you go back a few years they were average at best, and that is why they don't have a very high ranking. Clearly they will climb the rankings so long as they maintain their recent form. As for South Africa, they have lost a few away series of late but are rewarded for their consistent performances over recent years.

Just to add a bit more in terms of comparisons between the ICC and CW rankings:

The ICC rankings are highly susceptible to recent form and as such are prone to rapid fluctuations. Lose one series, and you can slide from 2nd to 6th (as shown by South Africa in the Test rankings). The CW rankings, however, place a lot more emphasis on sustained performances over a period of approximately three years.

So basically, keep winning, and you'll be on the way up.

Well despite losing the final to Australia, Pakistan were the real winners from the Videocon Cup, with their victory over India giving them a sweep on neutral territory, and moving them above India into 4th place in the table.

Well Sri Lanka have just made it a 5-0 sweep, closing the gap to South Africa in second by 41 points to 92. By virtue of having a losing record at home to South Africa, Pakistan lose out and drop back below India into 5th place.

So Pakistan move above India into 4th place but it's incredibly tight between 4 teams heading into the Champion Trophy. The top 3 and bottom 4 are unlikely to change much but alot to play for in the middle of the table.

Look at the record before that. The CW rankings tend to take into account the last three years, as opposed to the last week.

It's 4 or 5 series in total under this ranking system.

The system is based on 20 series I believe.
