What will be the effect on the positions of Pak and India in this this ranking system after their series .

I don't think anything has been confirmed re Pakistan v India, bearing in mind these are the ODI rankings. See separate thread for test rankings.

The next change will be after the conclusion of the VB Series and SA v WI. If WI can improve on their 6-1 thrashing of last time around they will probably overtake New Zealand for 7th place. In the VB Series, a good result for India would probably see them overtake Pakistan for 4th place (haven't done the maths!).

i have a question...
if there is a no result is it counted as half a win to each team or is the game simply not counted
ie after last nights aus/zim washout is their record for this series 3.5-0.5 or 3-0?

Without wishing to interfere with your ratings, do u think it would be a good idea to discard odis that are no result, because in these cases it is possible for teams to accumulate poitns without earning them at all- ie zimbabwe will get more points out of Aus because this series was 3.5-0.5 as opposed to last times' clean sweep, when they really did nothing to deserve this.

imo discarding no results would give a more accurate picture of the relative strengths of the sides

ties and draws in test matches, however, should still be half a point each as in these cases each of the teams have earnt what they have got

if possible post your thoughts on my suggestion...

It's an interesting point and one that we ought to give thought to in the coming days/weeks.

By the same token, some of the draws in Tests (eg Bangladesh's only non-defeat) were entirely down to the rain.

The way I see it, whichever way you do it will create problems, and it's a case of trying to minimise those issues.

Any other thoughts?

Whilst some test draws are entirely down to rain (ie bangladesh) i still feel a draw is a genuine 'result' in a test match- often it occurs when the dominating team does not have the courage/ability to go all out for a win (obviously if 4-5 days are washed out even this is not possible, but with the way time can be made up in tests with extra hours in the morning etc not all that many games are that severely interupted by rain). The ratings should reflect this by spillting a point.

ODIs that are ne result, however, i see as being different, as it is not as the dominating side had any chance to push for a win. Also i dont see how there is any gain in including these results, whilst there is the potential for a loss in the form of a skewing of the ratings, especially when a top team plays a very weak one.

This is just my opinion however, and there may be an even better way of doing it.

If Team A score 175 all out, and Team B is 174-0 off 24 overs, (I know it is a bit extreme, but it is possible) then that is a NR.

At the end of the day, teams will be in control in a NR and also in a bad position in a NR, but we have to rank it somehow!

I dont see how that situation provides any argument against simply not awarding any points for the match though.

I would say that with the number of games played, the odd NR doesn't really skew any rankings that much.

I'm going to have to agree with Don and Neil here - a system where no results are excluded seems far more efficient.

Don't forget, a no result is a no result, so you can't take much from it!

Sorry for delay - haven't been around recently.

In response to this subject - I agree, which is why no results have been excluded all along. :D

Thanks guys.

Forgot to mention yesterday I am at home for a few days but will be back at uni at the weekend and will update the rankings to include the SA v WI series and the VB Series then.

What I can say is the winners will be WI and India and the losers will be Australia and SA.

This is because the last time WI toured SA they lost 6-1, so 3-1 is an improvement (2-2 would have been a big improvement, but it wasn't to be).

Also last time India toured Australia they failed to take a game off the Aussies, but the score is currently 3-1 in that series. Obviously if it finishes 5-1 any change will be fairly minimal, but if India sweep the finals to make it 3-3 then that will have a big impact.

Here are the new rankings, updated to include the recent VB Series and South Africa v West Indies also:

Home
South Africa 1330 (-8)
Australia 1296 (-10)
Sri Lanka 1125 (+2)
West Indies 960
New Zealand 957 (+3)
England 952 (+2)
India 930 (+3)
Pakistan 889 (+2)
Zimbabwe 268 (+1)
Kenya 115
Bangladesh 35

Away
Australia 1352 (-1)
South Africa 1055
Pakistan 1042
India 967 (+16)
Sri Lanka 929 (-1)
England 892 (-1)
West Indies 769 (+18)
New Zealand 760 (-1)
Zimbabwe 454 (-5)
Kenya 322
Bangladesh 30

Total
Australia 1324 (-6)
South Africa 1192 (-5)
Sri Lanka 1027
Pakistan 965
India 949 (+10)
England 922 (+1)
West Indies 864 (+8)
New Zealand 858 (+1)
Zimbabwe 361 (-2)
Kenya 219
Bangladesh 32

So in terms of positional changes, West Indies leapfrog New Zealand for 7th place in both the away and overall tables. This is because on their last tour to South Africa they lost 6-1 in the ODI series, so 3-1 is an improvement for them.

India also gain 10 points and close the gap on Pakistan in the race for 4th place. This is because they managed to win a game, which they failed to do in Australia previously. Australia are still a long way in front though, and based on their form in the VB Series (8 wins, 1 loss), it looks like it could be some time before anyone gets near them!

In the next month, there are 6 ODIs between New Zealand and South Africa and 5 ODIs between Sri Lanka and Australia. The results which stand to be replaced are 1-0 and 2-1 respectively, so the top 2 could actually further strengthen their positions at the top of the table. It won't be easy though, as Sri Lanka and New Zealand have proven to be strong home sides.

I'm a bit confused say NZ win this series 5-1 does that replace the 1-0 series win (World Cup) or the series before that (VB I think) or the NZ at home series before that (a while ago in the 90's, won I think 3-2 by the South Africans?)?

Bazza

International 12th Man
The 1998/99 series which South Africa won 3-2 is still included. This series replaced the previous meeting, a one off match from 1994/95 won by New Zealand.

Here are the rankings updated to include the two recently completed series (Sri Lanka 2-3 Australia and New Zealand 5-1 South Africa).

Home
1 South Africa 1330
2 Australia 1293 (-3)
3 Sri Lanka 1123 (-2)
4 New Zealand 995 (+28)
5 West Indies 957 (-3)
6 England 948 (-4)
7 India 926 (-4)
8 Pakistan 887 (-2)
9 Zimbabwe 268
10 Kenya 115
11 Bangladesh 35

Away
1 Australia 1354 (+2)
2 Pakistan 1045 (+3)
3 South Africa 1025 (-30)
4 India 970 (+3)
5 Sri Lanka 934 (+5)
6 England 896 (+4)
7 West Indies 771 (+2)
8 New Zealand 760
9 Zimbabwe 457 (+3)
10 Kenya 330 (+8)
11 Bangladesh 30

Total
1 Australia 1323 (-1)
2 South Africa 1177 (-15)
3 Sri Lanka 1029 (+2)
4 Pakistan 966 (+1)
5 India 948 (-1)
6 England 922
7 New Zealand 878 (+20)
8 West Indies 864
9 Zimbabwe 362 (+1)
10 Kenya 222 (+3)
11 Bangladesh 32

Quick summary - obviously New Zealand have had a great result beating the formerly second best away side 5-1. As a result they have climbed above West Indies to 7th in the overall table. No other major changes because the result between Sri Lanka and Australia was similar to the one it replaced for ranking purposes.

Next up we have 5 ODIs between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh followed by 5 ODIs between Pakistan and India.
